The Miami Heat ultimately won the high-stakes pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo , overcoming a strong challenge from the Boston Celtics due to a crucial last-minute player swap. According to a report from The Athletic's Sam Amick and Eric Nehm, the Milwaukee Bucks initially resisted Miami's offers, which included veteran point guard Davion Mitchell .

The Bucks were hesitant to take on three incoming players, Mitchell, Tyler Herro , and Jaime Jaquez Jr. , who all had expiring contracts, as they only had one season left on their deals. This necessitated a strategic pivot for the Heat, who substituted rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis into the final package to successfully finalize the historic deal.
In addition to the significant player acquisition, this blockbuster trade presents a lucrative economic opportunity for Milwaukee. As noticed by Bobby Marks, by cleverly dividing the transaction into two separate moves, trading Bobby Portis for Jaquez Jr., Jakucionis, and Kel'el Ware, while sending Giannis exclusively for Herro, the Bucks stand to create a valuable $25.5 million trade exception.
This move significantly improves the team's financial situation. As shown in the franchise's 2026 offseason roster chart, Herro will anchor a restructured starting five alongside Ryan Rollins , AJ Green , Kyle Kuzma , and Myles Turner .
Furthermore, the Bucks will maintain a flexible projected team salary of $171 million, keeping them safely under the $201 million luxury tax threshold. Additionally, they hold the 10th and 13th picks in the upcoming draft and possess a $15 million Non-Tax Mid-Level Exception.

Despite this impressive collection of future assets, the emotional toll of parting with a franchise icon is hard to bear. Eric Nehm from The Athletic reported that members of Antetokounmpo's inner circle spent months coming to terms with his inevitable departure, often asking, "How the f— did we get here?"
After 13 legendary seasons, two MVP awards, and a historic championship in 2021, witnessing the beloved cornerstone player switch teams marks a surreal conclusion to Milwaukee's most successful era in modern basketball.
