Florian Wirtz got the headlines, and rightly so. Germany beat Serbia 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League and the 23-year-old ended the night with a goal, a major role in the opener and a first experience of captaining his country.
There is no need to overcomplicate it. He was decisive, composed and looked entirely at ease with extra responsibility. Some players wear the armband and it changes them. Wirtz looked like the same player, sharp in possession, quick in thought and efficient in the final third.

Wirtz took over as skipper for the second half and was clear about what it meant. He said afterwards: "It's something special. It wasn't on my to-do list but it makes you proud.
"I still tried to keep giving everything and make sure we saw the game out. We managed to do that."
That sums it up well. No drama, no grand speech, no manufactured sentiment. Pride, then focus. Germany were ahead and the job was to finish it properly. They did.
Germany's display had structure and purpose. Wirtz helped create the first goal and then scored the second with excellent control and finish. It was the key attacking contribution in a match that Germany largely controlled.
After the final whistle, he pointed to the collective work behind the result. "It was incredibly enjoyable. Every single player left everything out on the pitch. We followed the game plan and got almost everything right.
"The players around me made it easy for me. We had a lot of movement – that's when you can shine."
That is the important part. Individual quality matters, but good teams create the conditions for talented players to decide games. Germany had movement, discipline and enough quality in both boxes. Wirtz provided the cutting edge.
For Germany, the 2-0 win over Serbia was solid and efficient. For Wirtz, it was a reminder of where he stands. He is already one of the central figures in this side. Wearing the armband for the first time only reinforced that.
