Not everything about Oklahoma 's trip to Michigan was a disaster . The final score still reads 17-10 the wrong way , and the offense left plenty of reasons to stay frustrated.
Special teams, though, did its job.

And nobody did it better than Grayson Miller .
The fifth-year punter from Edmond was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week after putting together one of the cleaner hidden-yardage afternoons Oklahoma has had in a while. Miller averaged 48.6 yards on five punts in Ann Arbor, totaling 243 yards with no touchbacks and no returns. Three of those punts traveled at least 50 yards, including a long of 62. Three were also downed inside the 20. In a road game where field position kept working against the Sooners , that kind of consistency mattered.
The numbers get sharper when you look at the sequence. Miller's punts went 40, 51, 52, 38, and 62 yards. The 38-yarder was downed inside the 10. The 62-yarder with 4:43 left in the fourth pinned Michigan at its own 1. That is the whole point of the position on a day when the offense is stuck. Flip the field. Take away the return game. Make the other team start drives in bad air. Miller did all three.
It is also why the award fits. The Ray Guy Award does not just hand these weekly honors out for raw distance. Net average, hang time, placement, and return prevention all matter. Miller checked those boxes. Michigan never got a clean return chance. Oklahoma never gave away cheap touchbacks.

In a game defined by short fields and missed opportunities, the punter was one of the few Sooners who left the tape looking polished.
This is becoming a trend, not a one-off.
Miller is averaging 47.8 yards on six punts this season, with half of them already traveling 50 or more. Last year he set a school record with 24 punts of 50-plus yards. He also won Ray Guy Punter of the Week once before, after averaging 50.8 yards on four punts against Ole Miss on Oct. 28, 2025. The résumé is starting to look less like a nice complementary piece and more like one of the more reliable parts of the roster.
That reliability has value for a team trying to stabilize itself after a frustrating loss. Oklahoma 's offense needs cleaner protection and a real run game. The defense needs to get Kip Lewis back and create more negative plays. None of that gets solved by a punter.

What a punter can do is keep the team from bleeding extra yards while the rest of the operation finds its footing. Miller is doing that.
There is also a local layer that makes it easier to root for. Miller is an Edmond kid still booming balls for the home state school and winning national weekly recognition in the process. In a season already full of portal names, injury stress, and offensive inconsistency, a homegrown specialist quietly dominating his job is a useful reminder that not every positive development has to come from the flashiest room on the roster.
Oklahoma turns its attention to New Mexico this week at home. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2, and the Sooners will recognize their seniors in a pregame ceremony. It is the kind of game where the whole team should look sharper.
If the offense is still searching for rhythm, though, Miller's role remains important. Pinning people deep only helps if the defense and coverage units keep finishing the job around him.

So far, he has held up his end.
The Michigan loss is still going to dominate the larger conversation, and it should. Oklahoma left a winnable road game on the field. That does not erase a strong individual performance when one shows up.
Grayson Miller gave the Sooners exactly what they needed from the punter spot in Ann Arbor.
