The San Antonio Spurs suffered one of the most unthinkable collapses in NBA history in Game 4 against the New York Knicks , seeing a 29-point lead disappear during the second half. Now, instead of a 2-2 series, the Knicks have a 3-1 lead.
The most pivotal play in the collapse came in the last 30 seconds with the Spurs leading by one. Jalen Brunson missed a tough floater to take the lead, and De'Aaron Fox collected the long rebound without anybody between him and the basket. Instead of holding onto the ball and getting fouled, almost securing a win, Fox tried to beat OG Anunoby to the basket .
Anunoby blocked the ill-advised shot and the Knicks called timeout. With just a second remaining, Anunoby tipped in Jalen Brunson's miss to give the Knicks a 107-106 win.
After the game, Fox talked about that final sequence .
"I just thought I'd be able to outrun him," Fox said. "That's it."
Fox's mistake gave the Knicks an extra chance to win the game and complete the epic comeback, and it will go down as one of the biggest blunders in the history of the NBA Finals. While that play isn't the sole thing that cost the Spurs this game, it was the most important and will be remembered for that.
While Fox hit some big shots down the stretch of this game, it still wasn't his best effort as a whole in Game 4. He finished with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting. If the Spurs are going to come back and still win this series despite this crushing loss, Fox will have to be much better moving forward.
Despite his error, Fox will be one of the pillars that these young Spurs will have to lean on in order to get back up from this loss. He is one of their veterans, and one of the only ones that plays big minutes, so his experience will be crucial in this series. How he recovers from such a big mistake could be one of the biggest plot points left in the NBA Finals.
