Stanford football has made a big recruiting splash. On Monday, it was reported that the Cardinal won the recruiting battle for four-star prospect Hunter Fujikawa, landing a commitment from the star quarterback. Rivals/On3 insider Hayes Fawcett was first to report the news.
Fujikawa is a highly touted prospect, receiving offers from nearly 30 other programs including Ole Miss, Oregon, Arizona, Alabama and Auburn. After a visit to The Farm last weekend that exceeded expectations, during which he also saw the Cardinal beat NC State , he chose Stanford over the others and became the program's first 2028 commit.
He is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation for his recruiting class and the No. 180 player overall. Fujikawa always had Stanford on his radar, but the visit sealed the deal for him. Speaking with On3/Rivals reporter Greg Biggins, he broke down his decision and why Stanford is the right place for him to begin the next chapter of his career.
"Stanford really was the best of both worlds," Fujikawa told Biggins . "It's more than just football; it's a chance to get a world-class education as well, and the quarterback development is really big there. I'm going to have a chance to learn under some really good coaches, and that was big for me."
Fujikawa noted the tandem of Tavita Pritchard and Andrew Luck, alluding to their extensive NFL experience. Luck, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, put together an elite seven-season career that saw him make four Pro Bowls. If he hadn't retired early in 2019, he would have mostly likely continued on a Hall of Fame trajectory.
Pritchard spent three seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders, where he helped to develop Jayden Daniels during his 2024 Rookie of the Year campaign. Pairing him with Luck and to lead Stanford could be proving to be a beacon to talented quarterbacks during the recruiting phase.
"The coaches really believe in me there and made a point to let me know that," Fujikawa told Biggins. "They made it clear that they see me as a big part of the future of the program, and I love the vision they have for me and the future of the program."
Fujikawa sees himself excelling in Stanford's offense, though, with the scheme being a big fit for him. Pritchard is known for his QB-friendly schemes, evidenced by Davis Warren's resurgent campaign this season . For someone hoping to make it to the pros someday, being set up for success is key, and the Cardinal offer him two paths to finding success.
"I love the offense," Fujikawa added. "They broke down clips from my film and put them side by side with clips from their offense to show how similar they are. They run an NFL-style offense, which is exactly what I'm looking for. Just looking at what a great fit it is for me, along with the opportunity to develop as a quarterback, I knew this was the right move for me."
Stanford is showing major growth on the field this season in a lot of ways, and while the results have been mixed, confidence is high that the program will return to its winning ways in due time. Landing a player like Fujikawa will certainly help with that, and the hope now is that more big-name players join him in that 2028 class.
