Following his standout year at Arizona University, Andre Iguodala entered the NBA as the ninth pick in the 2004 draft, selected by the Philadelphia 76ers . Iggy's game thrived on athleticism, a high basketball IQ, defensive prowess, and leadership, which came to full fruition with the Golden State Warriors , where he won four championships, crowned with the 2015 Finals MVP.
What Iguodala didn't realize at first after arriving in the Bay Area was the enormous impact it would have on him both on and off the court. Iggy was drawn to the wide range of business opportunities that were offered in San Francisco, ranging from technology to innovation. After all, his first dream was to become a math teacher, so his interest in numbers, money, and finance was surprising for an NBA player.
Iguodala was an early investor in Zoom, Coinbase, Datadog, and Cloudflare, which brought him major wins. However, the biggest decision came when he retired in 2023 to lead his $200 million Mosaic fund, which has placed his net worth well above his $185 million NBA earnings.
Iggy drew inspiration from Warren Buffett
Despite his immaculate business knowledge and savviness, especially for an athlete, Iguodala had to pick up a few things from one of the greats.
Andre became one of the NBA's biggest businessmen, thriving as a start-up investor, putting his money where it's worth. Still, to be the best, you have to learn from the best, especially in the business world.
"Once you really care about your wealth, you realise that it's not a job. It's something that you learn and enjoy. You learn how to grow your wealth, you see how people have more money than you. One of my favorite books was "Snowball Effect" on Warren Buffett, and he was just a basketball player, but it was with collecting coins. He just thought of collecting coins instead of dribbling the basketball. The same expertise I had on the basketball court, he was getting it in the money world. Once I understood that I'm like, 'Hey, we can all do this,'" Iggy said .
As a result, Iggy never shies away from giving props to those who have helped him.
"I also got a chance to meet Warren Buffett once," he added . "I've been able to meet interesting people who have helped me. And in turn, I want to help out my fellow NBA players."
Iggy's other ventures
Andre's partnership with Mosaic focuses on early-stage investments in enterprises across sports technology, fintech, and software. Some notable holdings in the fund's portfolio consist of Coinbase, Robinhood, and the NFL agency Athletes First.
Iguodala's heart stayed in the Bay Area, where he is a minority owner of San Francisco-based National Women's Soccer League expansion team, Bay FC, as well as being the co-owner of San Francisco TGL Team alongside former teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson . With that, he is also a minority owner of the English soccer team Leeds United.
Since late 2023, Iguodala has served as the NBPA's Executive Director, and he is scheduled to step down in July of this year.
Aside from strictly business, Iggy became a media personality through his "Point Forward" podcast, where he talks about both sports and business, keeping his love for basketball alive.
