One ESPN analyst is now praising Luka Doncic following his stellar start to the season, but some fans have kept receipts.
Luka Doncic is averaging a whopping 38 points per game through his first seven games to start this season. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar has been unstoppable, and it has led to a 6-2 record for his team. Even though the season has only just begun, there have been MVP talks about Doncic.
The Slovenian has been one of the contenders for the award basically every year since his sophomore season in the league. Various factors have gotten in his way, including the fact that he has a lot of critics within the media. Even though one of them is now praising Luka, fans tend to have long memories.
Tim MacMahon of ESPN covered Doncic a fair bit during his time with the Dallas Mavericks. The analyst has been known for being fairly critical of Luka, having indirectly questioned his work ethic and his commitment in the past.
So even tho MacMahon recently called the Lakers man one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, echoing Giannis Antetokounmpo's sentiments, fans were quick to remind him of his past takes.
"Nah stay on that side Tim. You've been hating on Luka since day one," one fan wrote. "Lol Tim is changing his tune now that he realizes he was unbelievably wrong," another added. "This dude looked away when Giannis made that comment and turned towards him," a third fan said.
"Funny, cause I remember him saying moving on from Luka to Cooper was an upgrade for Dallas," a fourth fan pointed out. "An infallible indicator of greatness is when your haters turn into somewhat objective observers," said one comment, seemingly somewhat okay with what MacMahon had to say.
Ultimately, Doncic will need support in the media if he is going to win MVP. Naturally, his stated goal is to get a championship, but individual honours have to come at some point as well. If even his former detractors are now supporting Luka, that is a testament to how great he has been so far this year.
