Ahead of Sunday's AFC North clash with the Cincinnati Bengals , the Pittsburgh Steelers called up running back Lew Nichols from their practice squad on Saturday.
Nichols, who spent last season on the Steelers' practice squad, as well, was a seventh-round draft pick in 2023 and has also spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles . While at Central Michigan in 2021, he paced the nation with 1,848 yards on the ground.
"I really just stay even-keeled, man," Nichols said Thursday. "Not getting too high, not getting too low. Just being grateful for whatever position I am in at that moment. Everything has pros and cons, so just staying humble, and really just making the most of my opportunity, but I'm not really too caught up on fame and things of that sort. But, definitely, when I get my opportunity, I'm gonna make sure they know exactly who I am."
Both of the Steelers ' top two tailbacks — Jaylen Warren (shoulder) and Rico Dowdle (toe) — are dealing with injuries. Dowdle was ruled out for the game with the Bengals. Nichols brings a hard-nosed running style to the table.
"God made some guys fast, he made some guys strong," Nichols said after the Steelers' preseason finale. "I just lean on that, falling forward, and it's just a mentality. Wear on guys, third, fourth quarter, just lean on them. I just run hard. That's kinda just how I was bred, honestly."
