PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was in attendance for the first day of the team's three-day mandatory minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Tuesday, but he did not participate in drills during the portion of practice that is open to the media.
Porter had been at one of the team's two weeks of voluntary OTA sessions, but did not participate then, either, mostly riding a stationary bike off to the side.
At minicamp, he was watching drills during the portion of practice open to the media, conversing with Steelers scout Ike Taylor .
Porter didn't go as far as call his absence from drills a "hold-in," but he made it clear that it was contract, and not injury related.
"I'm just doing everything that I can and we'll take it day-by-day," Porter said.
The deals have been coming fast and furious for the Steelers this offseason, so Porter might not have to wait long. Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell got contracts done earlier this offseason, and Nick Herbig signed a new deal with the Steelers on Tuesday after practice.

Porter has become one of the best young cornerbacks in the league in his three seasons with the Steelers. He's allowed just one touchdown pass in his NFL career, and that was in 2023 as a rookie. While he had just one interception last year, he broke up a team-high 14 passes last season and had just a 55.9 passer rating while targeted. He also cut his penalties early in half, from 17 in 2024 to just nine in 2025.
