The Pittsburgh Steelers are hiring former Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. as assistant head coach/secondary coach, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network .
Whitt, 47, was on Mike McCarthy's for 11 years in Green Bay (2008-18). He started out as a defensive quality control coach before moving on as a cornerbacks coach for nine seasons. He served as the Packers' pass game coordinator in his last year under McCarthy in 2018.
Whitt was the Cleveland Browns ' pass game coordinator/secondary coach in 2019 before moving on to the Atlanta Falcons in 2020, where he held the same title. Whitt reunited with McCarthy in Dallas in 2021 as the Cowboys ' pass game coordinator/secondary coach.
Whitt was hired by the Commanders in 2024 to be their defensive coordinator. The two-year tenure was rather disappointing.
The Commanders ranked dead-last in the NFL in terms of yards allowed and 27th in points allowed in 2025. They produced the second-fewest turnovers and gave up the most first downs. After a 5-12 campaign, they agreed to part ways with Whitt after the season.
Washington head coach Dan Quinn took play-calling duties from Whitt after 10 games, leaving the writing on the wall that Whitt wouldn't be around next season.
