Training camp may be heating up, but the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly have one more defensive signing in the chamber.
According to Sports Illustrated's Noah Strackbein, sources indicate that the Steelers and former Super Bowl champion safety Jordan Whitehead are in discussions about a potential deal, with "mutual interest between the two sides in getting something done."
Whitehead, who played college football at the University of Pittsburgh, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played five seasons with the Buccaneers (2018-2021, 2024) and two with the New York Jets (2022-2023). During his first seven years, Whitehead appeared in 105 games, including 101 starts, recording 557 combined tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 45 passes defended, and 11 interceptions.
Whitehead suffered a severe neck injury, a cervical fracture, in a two-vehicle car crash while driving to the Buccaneers team facility in January 2025. While Whitehead ultimately missed the entire 2025 season, he was cleared to play football just a little over a week ago.
The Steelers have been battling injuries to start training camp, but Whitehead would offer some much-appreciated depth at safety.
