Seattle Seahawks fans learned last season that their favorite team didn't need wide receiver DK Metcalf to win football games. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the mercurial receiver's new team, are finding out that they don't need Metcalf to produce much for them to win.
In other words, as great as Metcalf believes he is as a player, and as much as he believes he is important to the team he plays for, the truth is that he doesn't seem to matter much. Teams can win without him, and do so quite often.
The wide receiver requested that the Seahawks trade him several times before he actually was during the 2025 offseason. Seattle gave Metcalf to the Steelers for a second-round pick, washed their hands of a player who was just as capable of a bombastic attitude as he was of on-field brilliance, and won a Super Bowl.
Steelers DK Metcalf same as the Seahawks DK Metcalf
Pittsburgh, looking to acquire a player who could be consistently explosive, got what they paid for: A fast and strong receiver who was a terrible route-runner with questionable hands.
That was never on better display than in Week 8, when quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw an accurate pass deep to Metcalf, who had the ball bounce off him and into the hands of Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward. The play summed up everything Metcalf is.
Yes, he's fast, and he can create elite athletic plays, but he also struggles to do the basics. He's likely one of the toys on the Island of Misfits Toys: Great speed and power, but with a subpar ability to catch the ball.
This season has been his worst in that regard. In the first eight games of 2026, he has dropped passes 15.4 percent of the time, an astonishingly high number for a player who gets paid an average of $33 million a season to do his job. Or, to be more correct, not do his job well.
He has caught just 33 of his 64 targets this season for 378 yards and a touchdown. His catch rate of 51.6 percent is a career low. He has never had fewer than five touchdown receptions in a season, but is on pace for two this year.
And yet, the Steelers are 6-2 and in first place in the AFC North. If Metcalf were to be traded, the team would almost certainly be just as good. The Steelers could be better because whatever they get back for Metcalf might improve the team more than keeping Metcalf would.
Pittsburgh would even save a little over a million dollars this season by trading the receiver. That is something they should think about as the November 10 deadline looms. Who knows? Maybe after throwing off the albatross of DK Metcalf, the Steelers could win the Super Bowl. That is how it worked out for the Seahawks , at least.
