A former player of the Pittsburgh Steelers does not think the team should be worried about quarterback Aaron Rodgers .
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on quarterback Aaron Rodgers to decide whether or not he wants to play again next season. However, Steelers legend Jerome Bettis doesn’t think they should be sweating his decision whatsoever.
“The Steelers have done some things to protect themselves in the event that he decides he does not want to play. But other than that, you have to be patient, willing to wait,” Bettis said on The Jim Rome Show . “When you look at the landscape, it’s changed, in terms of the other teams. So, if you were looking or thinking about Minnesota , they made moves. If you were thinking about the Raiders, that’s all changed. All of these opportunities have changed. So, I believe the only fit for Aaron right now is probably Pittsburgh.”
The Steelers have certainly done everything they can to prepare for life without Rodgers if that’s what he ultimately decides.
They selected Penn State quarterback Drew Allar with their first third-round pick (No. 76 overall) in the 2026 NFL Draft to pair with Will Howard and Mason Rudolph in their quarterback room, which Bettis believes has a lot of promise.
“We’ve got two young quarterbacks in the room,” Bettis continued. “Do either one of these have the skillset to be a starting quarterback in the NFL? I think that’s a question that needs to be answered as well. So, if Aaron does come, great. If he doesn’t come, then you still have an opportunity to develop some young quarterbacks and see if they’re capable.”
The Steelers then offered Rodgers a UFA tender, which is a contract that will allow them to retain his rights throughout the free agent process.
It’s a one-year contract at a 10% raise from his previous salary, which would be just over $15 million. Rodgers is still free to speak with other teams until either July 22 or the start of Steelers training camp, whichever comes first, but if he agrees to a deal with another team, he would net the Steelers approximately a fourth-round compensatory pick.
So, the Steelers seem to finally have a plan for whatever Rodgers eventually decides. That’s just a decision that they would surely like to have sooner rather than later.
