Michael Pittman Jr. is becoming one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' biggest disappointments of the 2026 season. What initially appeared to be a low-risk acquisition has developed into an expensive question mark for Omar Kahn's front office. The wide receiver was expected to provide Aaron Rodgers with a dependable weapon alongside DK Metcalf.
Instead, injuries and limited production have prevented him from making a meaningful impact.
In three appearances, Pittman has recorded just seven receptions for 89 yards on 12 targets. His 11% target share hardly reflects the prominent role Pittsburgh envisioned when acquiring him from the Indianapolis Colts. A foot injury further complicated matters, leaving the Steelers without a return on their investment. It may even lead to a trade deadline move to help offset his absence.
Unfortunately, Pittman's struggles could become an even bigger financial headache. His cap hit is scheduled to rise from approximately $8.9 million in 2026 to $26.1 million in 2027. That's a substantial commitment for a wideout who has yet to establish himself in Pittsburgh's offense.
With younger receivers emerging and valuable cap space at stake, Khan faces an uncomfortable question: Is Michael Pittman Jr. worth keeping on the Steelers roster beyond this season?
Keeping Pittman would be a calculated gamble.
The veteran wide receiver still has time to prove his worth before the season's end. I still believe he can become a reliable target for Aaron Rodgers. Before this campaign, Pittman Jr. only missed six games in seven seasons due to injury. This season, he's missed five outings while on injured reserve. It's a rough spot to be in, especially for a wideout accustomed to being present on the field.
"It's been tough," Pittman Jr. shared with Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh Monday morning. "[It's] the most injuries I've had to deal with in my seven years." In 2020, a calf injury sidelined the former second-round pick during his rookie season. He missed three games, but finished the season with 40 receptions and 503 receiving yards.
It was an impressive bounce back for a rookie. But is Pittman Jr. capable of making a formidable impact when he returns this year?
That's certainly the goal. "I try to get back out there as fast as possible and prove to this team that I came here to better it and not just sit on the sideline," Pittman Jr. said.
That would certainly be a welcome development. Sure, Mike McCarthy's offense has received assistance from role players during Pittman Jr.'s absence. Rookie Germie Bernard's target share (18%) has increased as he develops a stronger relationship with Rodgers this season. He ranks fourth in receiving yards (284) and third in receptions (32) among NFL rookies.
Tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington have also become integral to Pittsburgh's passing attack. Together, they account for 46 receptions, 489 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns so far.
Pittman still has an opportunity to prove he belongs in Mike McCarthy's offense. But with a $26 million cap hit looming in 2027, the veteran's remaining appearance could determine whether Pittsburgh views him as a dependable investment or an expensive mistake.
For a receiver brought in to make Aaron Rodgers' final run easier, the pressure to deliver has never been greater.
