The biggest focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers ' roster ahead of the upcoming trade deadline has centered on two positions: wide receiver and the secondary. It's understandable why both have drawn so much attention. However, after Week 7, one thing has become apparent: the Steelers have an underrated strength developing behind the scenes.
At one point, cornerback appeared to be a position of strength until the Steelers were forced to trade Joey Porter Jr. Now, their defensive line has emerged as a surprisingly deep group. Pittsburgh's starters have performed at a high level, but the young players behind them have delivered strong performances of their own.
Who Do the Steelers Have Developing on Their Defensive Line?

The homegrown stars on Pittsburgh's defensive line are well-known names. On the interior, Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton have been core components of the defense. Along the edge, T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig have established themselves as defensive forces. However, Herbig and Benton were once considered developmental prospects themselves.
Now, their development and impact on game day have set an example for the next wave of talent. The Steelers currently have four young defensive linemen who are continuing to develop. Each has contributed at some point this season, with the following PFF grades:

Sawyer and Black have contributed in rotational roles while making plays in different ways. Black is developing into a modern nose tackle prototype and has shown improvement as a pass rusher at times this season. Sawyer has also made an impact with run stops and pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Harmon is currently on injured reserve, but he got off to a strong start this season before his injury. One of the players stepping in to help fill the void has surprised many with his performance. Rubio has stood out on film as a run defender, displaying an impressive ability to hold his ground at the point of attack.

These young defensive linemen have plenty of football ahead of them, but the early returns are promising. Pittsburgh has acquired this talent through the draft and, much like Herbig and Benton, appears to be developing these prospects effectively.
The Steelers' defensive line may not generate the same headlines as their wide receivers or secondary, but the organization is quietly building depth at a critical position. If these young players continue to progress, Pittsburgh could have a strong foundation along the defensive front for years to come.
