The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Terell Smith off the Washington Commanders' practice squad, according to Nick Farabaugh of PennLive .
This marks the second cornerback this week that the Steelers have poached from a team's practice squad. The Steelers signed veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad, as well.
Farabaugh reported that Smith was seen in Pittsburgh's locker room with a locker. With signing him off Washington's practice squad, the Steelers must keep him on their 53-man roster for at least three weeks. The same goes for Murphy-Bunting.
The Steelers are thin at cornerback right now with the Joey Porter Jr. trade and Jamel Dean dealing with an ankle injury.
Dean is expected to miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Dean has been dealing with ankle problems all season. He first suffered an ankle injury in the team's Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots, missing the end of that game.
Asante Samuel Jr. and rookie Daylen Everette are expected to be the team's starting cornerbacks in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts, with usual slot cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Brandin Echols providing depth.
In 26 career games (six starts), Smith has posted 68 tackles, 10 passes defended and an interception.
Smith was a fifth-round pick by the Bears in 2023.
Smith was waived by Chicago as part of their final roster cuts on Aug. 30. He signed with Washington's practice squad on Sept. 1.
