Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers notified their coaching staff they are free to pursue other opportunities. This is in anticipation of sweeping changes coming after the team hires a new head coach. Mike Tomlin stepped down just over a week ago and the team is working on in-person interviews with candidates this week.
Of the Steelers three coordinators, the first to find a new job is special teams coordinator Danny Smith. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Smith is preparing to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their new special teams coordinator. Smith is 72 years old but is still one of the best special teams coaches in the league.
Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will have some opportunities soon as either an offensive coordinator or head coach. He's had multiple interviews and has enough experience to warrant serious consideration. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has had no interest from any teams. This isn't surprising, as most critics point to Austin's inability to maximize the potential of one of the best defensive rosters in the NFL.
