The NFL trade deadline prompts NFL front offices to think outside the box to improve rosters. Fortunately, the Pittsburgh Steelers are ahead of schedule during Aaron Rodgers' final rodeo as they sit at 5-2 following a win in Paris over the New Orleans Saints. But a last-minute investment could take Mike McCarthy's roster to the next level.
According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders may be the best move. Barnwell believes swapping a 2028 sixth-round pick for safety Isaiah Pola-Mao and a 2028 seventh-round selection would be beneficial for Pittsburgh in the long run.
The proposal makes plenty of sense for Pittsburgh.
The former USC Trojan has developed into a solid rotational player since entering the NFL. In 2022, Las Vegas signed him as an undrafted free agent. Since then, he's worked his way from a reserve and special teams role into the starting lineup.
His development eventually earned him a pivotal role.
Experience in Las Vegas transformed him into a dependable defender. It didn't take long before it showed on the gridiron. In 2025, Pola Mao earned 92 total tackles, two interceptions, and four pass deflections. He also showcased versatility and an exceptional nose for the football.
The rare skill set caught the attention of the defensive coordinator at the time, Patrick Graham. "He's played linebacker for us before; he's played down safety; he's played post safety," Graham explained.
Acquiring another versatile weapon would be the perfect way for Omar Khan to strengthen Pittsburgh's defense. But does the front office believe the NFL trade deadline can improve the roster?
Well, they should. Especially considering the current condition of Patrick Graham's secondary.
Pittsburgh's defense has fared well leading up to Week 8. But injuries are taking a toll on a pretty thin group. Sure, Jalen Ramsey's dominant performance against Tampa Bay was one for the ages. He received AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for accumulating ten tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks during a 26-19 comeback overtime win.
But his wrist injury is something to monitor as the season, and Ramsey may have been the worst Steelers defender on the field in Week 8 against the Saints.
The All-Pro has been able to play through the discomfort. Without him, rookie Robert Spears Jennings and Jaquan Brisker would be left without a substitute while DeShon Elliot (knee) plays a limited role after being activated from injured reserve.
Brisker has been one of the most consistent pieces of the depleted group. This season, the former Nittany Lion ranks second on the defense in total tackles (41) and hasn't missed a game. Meanwhile, Spears Jennings is surpassing seventh-round evaluations as a significant contributor.
Although Elliot is gradually returning, Pittsburgh cannot afford to overlook its lack of depth . Pola-Mao would provide Patrick Graham with another experienced option regardless of Ellliots's availability.
They need a versatile addition to the secondary. It seems the front office is already preparing for another move. Pittsburgh recently released veteran safety RayShawn Jenkins. He appeared in all six games but started only one.
A vacancy on the depth chart should prompt Omar Khan to consider engaging in a trade that could add depth to the depleted secondary. Exchanging a 2028 sixth-round pick for Isaiah Pola-Mao sounds like a great decision. He has 31 starts under his belt and is familiar with Patrick Graham from his time in Las Vegas. The veteran is also in a reduced role this season after only one start.
Pittsburgh would also move from the sixth to the seventh round in 2028 while keeping its earlier picks available for bigger needs.
