Smith questions the timing of Johnson's decision
During the October 7, 2026, episode of First Take, Smith questioned why Johnson announced his retirement 4 games into Philadelphia's season rather than during the offseason. He linked the timing to the Eagles' early-season difficulties.
Smith used a mocking imitation while discussing Johnson's explanation. His remarks drew criticism because Johnson had cited his mental health as a reason for stepping away.

ESPN reporter Kimberley A. Martin directly challenged Smith during the discussion on First Take. She said his comments appeared to make light of Johnson's retirement and the reasons behind it.

Johnson had already considered retirement
Johnson's departure did not come without earlier signs that he was thinking about life beyond football. Before the 2026 season began, he had discussed the possibility that the campaign could be his last.
The veteran tackle had also considered retirement after the 2025 season before deciding to return. His October announcement therefore followed earlier discussions about family priorities and the next stage of his life.

Mental health remains central to the debate
Johnson explicitly stated that prioritizing his mental health was critical when announcing his retirement. He also referred to changes in his personal and family priorities as he explained why he was leaving football.
Smith's comments became controversial because viewers connected his jokes about the timing to Johnson's stated reasons. The disagreement centered on how a sports commentator discussed a player's decision to address personal well-being.
