The Ball State Cardinals will take on the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET at Scheumann Stadium (Muncie, Ind.).
Ball State is coming home looking for redemption after taking a loss in their road opener. They were dealt a punishing 56-3 defeat at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 1. Sadly, the loss continues a streak the team started last season, making it four in a row.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Ball State was not effective on offense and finished the game with only 165 total yards. They have not posted that few total yards since Oct. 11, when they gained 88 vs. Western Michigan.
Meanwhile, Stony Brook didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against the Lindenwood Lions in Week 1, but they still walked away with a 36-32 win. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Seawolves were down 22-7 in the second quarter.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Stony Brook to victory, but perhaps none more so than quarterback Quinn Boyd, who threw for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 77.1% of his passes, and also punched in one score on the ground. Boyd's passing yards production has been exceptional as that marked his sixth straight game with at least 270 passing yards dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was running back CJ Hester, who rushed for 95 yards and two TDs.
Another reason for the win was Stony Brook's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Defensive lineman Reggie Darkah was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself.
Going forward, Ball State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 14.5 points. They finished last season with an even 6-6 record against the spread.
