Brandon Aiyuk 's future with the 49ers is now tied more to his contract situation than anything on the pitch. It's become a question of leverage, as much as football.
San Francisco has removed over $26 million in guarantees for 2026 from Aiyuk's contract, which has changed more than just his financial security—it's also altered the entire approach to how this standoff might end.

Without that guaranteed money, there's less urgency for the 49ers to make a decision. They can now afford to wait and fit any move around their existing cap plans.
Kyle Shanahan called it "unusual" at the time, and nothing about this story has made that word any less accurate.
Most disputes between receivers and teams follow a familiar path: the player pushes for more money, the team stalls, and eventually there's a trade, an extension or a standoff.
This one changed when the contract did. Reports say the guarantees were voided due to missed communication, rehab and team obligations. Aiyuk didn't challenge it through the NFLPA, so the void stood. That detail didn't just shift the contract; it changed the power dynamics entirely.

Control has become the central issue
At this point, Aiyuk isn't just a player – he's a contract situation that needs to be figured out.

Trading him is complicated. Teams have to look at his injury history, his current deal, and whether he'd fit into their plans.
The 49ers aren't under the same pressure anymore. They don't have to make a quick decision.
That's why nothing's happened yet. It's late May, and while Aiyuk's talent isn't in question, it's the contract details that are slowing everything down.
Any potential move involving Brandon Aiyuk won't just depend on his abilities. The calendar might matter even more.
According to cap analysts, waiting until after 1 June would let San Francisco spread the dead money hit across two seasons, making things much easier on their books.

This is part of why the 49ers haven't rushed into anything. They can afford to be patient and see how things unfold elsewhere in the league.
This has gone well beyond a standard receiver situation. It's now about managing the bigger picture for the roster.
The trade market is complicated for both sides
Aiyuk's ability has never been in doubt. He's shown he can run every route and create separation, giving him the tools to contribute in any system.
But there are hurdles. He's coming off a major knee injury, his contract no longer includes future guarantees, and there are questions about how things ended with the 49ers.

Before making an offer, teams will want to see clean medicals and some contract flexibility. Until then, they'll hold onto their assets.
This isn't a deal that will be forced quickly by either side. The league can wait this out just as long as San Francisco can.
Normally, players of Aiyuk's ability aren't left in limbo like this. Trades and extensions usually come together faster when the player is this talented, but his contract has complicated things.
San Francisco now has room to manoeuvre, while Aiyuk is left with less certainty about what comes next. That's not an easy situation for a team to walk into without hesitation.

This is why we're still waiting for a resolution, and there's no reason to think it'll move quickly from here.
