The 2026 Men's World Cup has entered its second week, meaning that teams are getting a chance to play their second games of the tournament. Thus far, two former Syracuse University men's soccer standouts have had differing experiences at the World Cup. Miles Robinson (Team USA) and Tajon Buchanan (Canada) are both representing their home nations.
Robinson and Buchanan's ties to Syracuse soccer
Robinson was a member of the Orange program from 2015-16 before embarking on his professional career.
During Robinson's fist season in Central New York, the Orange reached the program's first ever NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance, losing against Clemson . Robinson's sophomore season included another NCAA Tournament appearance, along with him being named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year.
A Canada native, Buchanan also spent two seasons as a member of the Syracuse program. As a freshman, he was a member of the 2017 All-ACC Third Team and then he earned First-Team honors as a sophomore. He led the Orange in scoring as a sophomore with 20 points. Buchanan's professional career has included stints with professional organizations based in Canada, Spain, Italy and the United States.
Buchanan's performance in match two for Canada
After logging 26 total touches for Canada in the country's opening round match, Buchanan nearly tripled that output in match two versus Qatar.
Buchanan led all Canadian forwards with 64 total touches. Buchanan's output also included four shots and one total shot on goal. Buchanan was one of just five forwards who saw action in the matchup against Qatar. Canada won 6-0, meaning they have a win and a draw thus far.
Miles Robinson's performance in match two for Team USA
Last Friday, Robinson along with 11 of each teammates, did not appear on the pitch for team USA's 4-1 win over Paraguay.
Friday proved to be more of the same for Robinson. Team USA defeated Australia 2-0 but Robinson has still yet to log any minutes of action.
What's up next for Robinson and Buchanan?
Team Canada only needs one more point and they will secure the top spot from the Group B draw. A top spot from Group B would advance Canada to the knockout round and secure a matchup against the best third-place team from one of several different groups. Canada will conclude their round robin group stage with a match against Switzerland on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.
Team USA return to the pitch on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET when they face off against Türkiye. A win in Thursday's match would clinch the top spot for the Americans in Group D. If Team USA wins, their opponent in the Round of 32 would be the best third- place team from one of several groups as well.
