- “Can’t Take Accountability for Being a Mediocre Coach”: Fans Rip Deion Sanders After Shedeur Sanders Admission

Deion Sanders might be feeling the heat this season, as the Colorado Buffaloes fell embarrassingly in Week 3 at Northwestern 41-7. The game brought back memories of an embarrassing 2025 season, in which Colorado struggled mightily and ended with a 3-9 record.
According to Deion Sanders, something really is different from his first two seasons in charge of Colorado: He doesn't have Shedeur Sanders at quarterback.
On Tuesday, he admitted as much during a news conference:
"I took for granted that position, of how valuable it was because that position was always one room over in my house. So, it's easy to take that for granted when it's right there. My whole life of coaching youth ball, coaching junior high, coaching high school, coaching college. It was right there. … all I gotta do was wake him up, and he was going to do what he was going to do," Sanders said (Timestamp: 40:50) .
Fans reacted on X to his comments, not in the kindest manner.
"Just can't take 'accountability' for being a medicore coach," one person wrote .
Some fans just couldn't believe they were hearing this from a Power Four coach.
Was Deion Sanders wrong to stay coaching after his son's college career was done?
Meanwhile, others thought Deion Sanders was overestimating his son's abilities.
Nostalgia might be blinding Deion Sanders a bit, as Colorado wasn't an outright success with Shedeur Sanders at quarterback. While they stunned the world of college football with an upset over then national championship runner-up TCU in their season opener of the 2023 season, the season ended up being a mediocre 4-8. Shedeur was also criticized that year for being the most sacked quarterback in the country.
The one winning season Deion Sanders has led at Colorado came in 2024, when Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter were at their peak. With a record of 9-4, they ended the year ranked as the No. 25 team in the nation but fell to BYU in the Alamo Bowl and missed the Big 12 championship game.
Colorado (2-1, 0-0 Big 12), which is 18-22 in its fourth season under Sanders, visits Baylor (2-1, 0-0) this week in the teams' first Big 12 game of the season.
