It has been one of the most prominently talked-about storylines when it comes to the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason, and it revolves around their defensive line.
The Bengals made it a priority to fix it by adding players like Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen to the interior, while keeping B.J. Hill as well, who is still a dependable veteran.
While the interior defensive line depth is now stacked, there is still a player whose name is falling out of the spotlight who is still impactful. That player is T.J. Slaton, and his early performances in training camp are showing why he shouldn't be overlooked.
T.J. Slaton is Showing He Shouldn't Be Forgotten
On Tuesday, August 4, Slaton showed that he can still be a pivotal player for the Bengals by having his best practice of camp. He found a way to get through the offensive line twice to create pressure on Joe Burrow
Slaton's value has always been his ability to occupy space and make offenses work for rushing yards. Slaton's 6'5, 340-pound frame allows him to absorb double-teams and rarely be displaced in the middle of the defensive line.
However, Slaton is starting to evolve into an interior player that can also impact the passing game by generating pressure. If he can build on this showing by consistently collapsing the pocket, it'll further help the entire defensive line perform at their best.
The improvement from Slaton also will help Al Golden not have to rush Hill back off the PUP list. During the regular season too, Golden can feel better about relying on a defensive tackle rotation that includes Lawrence, Allen, Slaton and Hill based on the situation and to keep each healthy for the entire season.
While Slaton might not be the flashiest name, his value still needs to be discussed when it comes to the Bengals' defensive line.
