The Houston Rockets have stormed out of the gate to begin the 2026–27 season, standing at a perfect 4-0 after back-to-back victories over the Atlanta Hawks. While the headlines often focus on Houston's star players, the young forward Tari Eason is proving to be the team's ultimate spark plug off the bench, building a potential early case for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.
Eason's relentless physical play on both ends of the floor has transformed Houston's second unit into a dominant force. Defensively, Eason functions as Houston's Swiss Army knife. His 7-foot-2 wingspan and quick recovery speed allow him to switch seamlessly onto perimeter ball-handlers or protect the rim.

Eason has a 2.8% career steal percentage (CSP), meaning that he generated a steal on nearly 3 out of every 100 opponent possessions. This ranks him #1 in the entire NBA for CSP, topping even two-time Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest perimeter defensive forwards in NBA history.
Offensively, Eason's ability to generate second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds and high caliber interior finishing gives the Rockets an overwhelming physical advantage on the second unit.
Eason has performed well this season. In October 26th's 120–110 victory against Atlanta, Eason delivered another versatile performance, tallying 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 33 high-impact minutes off the bench. His disruptive defensive presence was on full display as he repeatedly anchored the paint and altered Atlanta's shots during key stretches.
He had even better offensive statistics in his previous game against the Hawk s on October 24th. Eason poured in a season-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting. He also added 3 rebounds, 1 block and 1 assist.

Traditionally, Sixth Man winners lead their bench in total points, so Eason will need to continue to average at least 15 points per game. Eason will have to gain more votes than the other strong candidates, such as Payton Pritchard, Ajay Mitchell, and Dylan Harper
Eason's candidacy relies on high-efficiency two-way dominance, combining rebounding, interior rim protection, and fast-break generation. If voters prioritize game-altering defensive impact alongside scoring depth, Eason holds a distinct edge over the field.
If Eason maintains this level of two-way impact while helping propel the Rockets toward the top of the Western Conference standings, he can cement himself as a frontrunner for Sixth Man of the Year honors.
