Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls has officially won his first career Rawlings Gold Glove Award, becoming the first infielder in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
Walls is also Tampa Bay's first Gold Glove winner since Kevin Kiermaier earned the award in 2019.

And while Walls has consistently been recognized for his defensive abilities throughout his career, this year's accomplishment is particularly impressive considering the competition.
The 29-year-old earned the American League Gold Glove Award at shortstop over Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. and Toronto Blue Jays infielder Andrés Giménez.
Witt had won the previous two Gold Glove Awards at shortstop, while Giménez entered the season with three career Gold Gloves at second base.
However, Walls defensive performance throughout the 2026 season was difficult to ignore. The veteran finished the regular season with 21 Defensive Runs Saved, leading all MLB shortstops while tying for third among all defensive players.

Walls also recorded an 81% success rate on fielding opportunities, demonstrating his ability to consistently turn difficult plays into outs.
And while those numbers are certainly impressive, his defensive success isn't necessarily surprising. Since making his MLB debut in 2021, Walls has accumulated 73 Defensive Runs Saved, establishing himself as one of baseball's most reliable defensive infielders.
His ability to anticipate where the baseball will be hit, along with his defensive positioning and preparation, has consistently made him valuable to Tampa Bay.
Walls has also faced considerable criticism throughout his career because of his offensive production. The veteran owns a career batting average around .200 and has struggled to provide consistent production at the plate.

And while those offensive concerns are certainly legitimate, Tampa Bay has continued relying on Walls because of his defensive abilities.
Walls defense also played an important role in helping the Rays reach their third World Series in franchise history.
And while Tampa Bay ultimately fell short against the Milwaukee Brewers, his individual accomplishment provides another positive moment following an impressive season.
The Rays will have several important roster decisions to make this offseason, but Walls has once again demonstrated why his defensive abilities remain valuable to the organization.

His first Gold Glove also reflects Tampa Bay's continued emphasis on defensive preparation and consistency.
And while Walls offensive struggles have often received the most attention throughout his career, his first Gold Glove serves as a reminder of just how valuable his defense has been to the Rays.
After years of being recognized as one of baseball's better defensive shortstops, Walls finally has the award to show for it.
