TCU football already knows what a miracle season looks like.
The 2022-23 Horned Frogs didn't just crash the College Football Playoff party ... They won a game, reached the national championship and gave the Big 12 something it still hasn't seen from anyone else in the league.

That team had Max Duggan , yes. But it also had the glue guys. The transfers. The veterans. The under-the-radar pieces who made the whole thing work. Alan Ali, Mark Perry and Josh Newton weren't just roster additions. They were difference-makers.
TCU on SI postulated that there are three current TCU Horned Frogs who could make the biggest difference in 2026.
The Frogs have bigger-name questions after losing players like Josh Hoover and Eric McAlister , but the season may swing on a few names who aren't getting nearly enough attention.

Start with John Hoyet Chance . Nobody wants to build a hype campaign around a punter, but special teams can flip games fast, especially in the Big 12.
TCU 's net punting was a major problem last season, ranking near the bottom nationally at 111th out of 134 teams. That puts pressure on the defense, shortens the field for opponents and quietly drains momentum.
Chance arrives from Louisiana Tech with real production. He netted 43 yards per punt last season, a number that ranked sixth nationally. Compare that to Ethan Craw's 37-yard net average, and that's not a small upgrade.
That's a field-position weapon. With TCU breaking in a new offensive coordinator and likely working through early-season bumps, Chance could be one of the most important stabilizers on the entire roster.

Then there's Max Carroll , who might be the defensive wild card. Carroll has been talked about for a while, but 2026 feels like the year when potential needs to become production.
At 6-3 with athletic traits that pop, he gives TCU the kind of linebacker body that can play downhill, chase sideline-to-sideline and still hold up in coverage.
The comparison TCU fans want to dream on is Dee Winters , the explosive linebacker from the championship run who brought speed, violence and attitude to the middle of the defense.
Carroll doesn't have to become Winters overnight, but the Frogs need him to bring some of that same edge. If he can handle bigger snaps and become a reliable run-and-pass defender, TCU's defense suddenly looks a lot more dangerous.

The biggest swing piece may be Ben Taylor-Whitfield. Left tackle isn't a glamour position until things go wrong, and for a right-handed quarterback, it's one of the most important jobs on the offense.
With Jaden Craig stepping into a bigger spotlight, Taylor-Whitfield's development could decide how comfortable this offense looks.
TCU's offensive line hasn't consistently matched the standard set during the championship run. Taylor-Whitfield has the size and strength to change that, but his technique has to catch up.
The penalties and missed details that hurt drives last season can't carry over. New offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis brings a physical, run-first background, and that means the offensive line won't just be asked to survive. It'll be asked to set the tone.

That's where Taylor-Whitfield becomes fascinating. If he cleans up his hands, improves his footwork and plays with better discipline, he could become the kind of anchor TCU has been missing up front.
If he doesn't, the Frogs could spend too much of 2026 fighting uphill on offense.
TCU doesn't need a roster full of household names to make noise. The championship team proved that. It needs the right players to overachieve in the right spots.

Chance can fix field position. Carroll can bring juice to the defense. Taylor-Whitfield can protect the offense's future.
Those aren't the flashiest storylines in Fort Worth, but they may be the ones that decide whether TCU is merely rebuilding ... or quietly loading up for something much more dangerous.
