TCU is backing away from one of the strangest media fights of the young college football season.
The school announced Friday that it has fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, ending a dispute that began after the newspaper's reporting on an August locker room altercation involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma.

TCU said the two sides held what it called "productive discussions" and agreed to move forward. That's probably the right move.
The original decision to pull the newspaper's credentials created a bigger story than the football program needed, especially after more serious details surrounding the altercation became public.
Fields was dismissed from the team following the Aug. 13 incident and later arrested on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Ezukanma suffered a brain bleed, concussion and other injuries and was hospitalized for three days.

Those details turned what initially looked like an internal locker room confrontation into a significant legal and player-safety story.
The media dispute grew out of the Star-Telegram's initial reporting on what may have led to the incident.
The newspaper cited an unnamed source who alleged Fields had been targeted by teammates and that coaches were aware of escalating tension.
That reporting was later revised to remove the suggestion that bullying or mistreatment motivated the altercation.
TCU athletic director Mike Buddie argued that the disputed information created a dangerous narrative and resulted in threats toward a student-athlete and his family.

The school responded by revoking the Star-Telegram's access to athletic events and interview sessions.
That included TCU's season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, although beat reporter Steven Johnson still traveled to Ireland and covered the game without normal team credentials.
Now the standoff is over.
TCU said Friday it respects the Star-Telegram's role as an independent news organization and is ready to turn attention back toward the season.
That's easier said than done.

Fields' legal case remains unresolved, Ezukanma's health is still part of the story, and questions surrounding how the incident escalated aren't disappearing just because media access has been restored.
Still, ending the credential fight removes one unnecessary distraction. For TCU, that's probably the first step toward getting the conversation back where the program wants it ... football.
