PHILADELPHIA, PA — Tennessee ruined the fun of Miami (Ohio) by dispatching the RedHawks rather handily in the first round, 78-56.

The Vols followed that up by ruining Virginia's hopes of its first Sweet 16 berth since 2019 on Sunday.

Tennessee vs Virginia March Madness live updates

Tennessee defeats Virginia, advances to Sweet 16

For the fourth consecutive season, Rocky Top is heading to the Sweet 16 of the Men's NCAA Tournament. 6-seed Tennessee knocks off 3-seed Virginia 79-72 The Volunteers will get 2-seed Iowa State in Chicago next weekend.

Tennessee ended the game on a 9-1 run, with all nine points coming from the free-throw line. Vols didn't make a single field goal in the last 3:37.

Ja'Kobi Gillespie hits free throws

Ja'Kobi Gillespie drains a pair of free throws, and Tennessee grows its lead to four at 75-71.

Virginia challenge unsuccessful

Virginia's challenge on the out-of-bounds call is unsuccessful. Tennessee keeps the ball.

Virginia challenging out of bounds call

Ryan Odom pulls the challenge card out on an out-of-bounds call. It was called Tennessee ball by the officials after the ball bounced off Bishop Boswell's head, but was tipped by a finger of a UVA player. Big call coming up here with 27.6 seconds left and Tennessee leading 73-71.

Virginia fouls Bishop Boswell

Bishop Boswell takes a hard hit mid-air from Chance Mallory and gets sent to the free-throw line. He makes both 1-of-2 throws, and Tennessee extends its lead to 73-71 with 46.8 seconds left.

Tennessee leads with under minute

Felix Okpara gets a key defensive rebound for Tennessee, and the Volunteers call a timeout after they bring the ball across the court. The Volunteers lead Virginia 72-71 with 59.9 seconds left in the second half.

Thijs De Ridder drains 3-pointer to give Virginia lead

Thijs De Ridder continues to be the hot hand for Virginia, as he drains an open 3-pointer in front of the Cavaliers' bench to put them up 71-70 with 2:03 remaining in the second half. UVA is now outscoring Tennessee 40-34 in the second half.

Tennessee leading at final media timeout

A jumper from J.P. Estrella gives Tennessee the 70-68 lead over Virginia with 2:39 to go in the second half. He has the last four points for Tennessee.

Media timeout on the floor.

Thijs De Ridder ties game with free throws

The game is tied at 66-66 with a pair of free throws from Thijs De Ridder. Tennessee (and its fans) was unhappy with the officials' call. What a comeback here by Virginia.

Johann Grunloh, Virginia cut deficit to two

Here comes Virginia.

Johann Grunloh lays down an emphatic dunk that gets the Virginia fans awake and Tennessee calls a timeout to discuss things. The lead is down to two points for the Volunteers.

Virginia is SCORCHING hot from the field right now as it has hit each of its last seven shots from the field. We've got a game at 66-64 Tennessee with 5:24 to go.

Virginia continues to cut into Tennessee lead

Thijs De Ridder hits another 3-pointer for Virginia, and the Tennessee lead is down to five points. De Ridder is now up to a team-high 15 points for UVA.

It's 63-58 Tennessee with 7:29 to go.

Ja'Kobi Gillespie drains 3-pointer at shot buzzer

JA'KOBI.GILLESPIE.

The Tennessee guard, who has been fantastic in two games here in Philadelphia, recovers from a near half-court violation and drains a crazy 3-pointer as the shot clock goes off. J.P. Estrella then hits a jumper inside the paint on the Volunteers' next possession that gets the fans going with the lead up to 62-55.

Thijs De Ridder hits 3-pointer for Virginia

Thijs De Ridder continues to be a bright spot of Virginia's offense. He hits a 3-pointer in front of the Cavaliers bench to put him into double figures, and Ryan Odom calls a timeout on the floor. He's up to 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting with four rebounds.

It's a six-point game at 57-51 in favor of Tennessee with 10:11 left in the second half. The Volunteers' offense isn't slowing down, but the Cavaliers continue to find ways to keep themselves in the game.

Tennessee extends leads to seven

The Volunteers extend their lead to seven as Felix Okpara goes 1-of-2 at the free throw line. The Volunteers are 5-of-6 in their last shot attempts from the field.

Virginia cuts into deficit with 3-pointers

Chance Mallory hits a 3-pointer to cut Virginia's deficit to four points, but Jaylen Carey responds with a tough layup at the glass while drawing the foul. Carey makes the free throw, and Tennessee is back up 51-44.

Both teams are feeling it early offensively in the second half.

Nate Ament fouled, goes down on shot attempt into media timeout

Nate Ament tries to hit a mid-ranger jumper just outside the paint, but is instead fouled in his shooting process by Thijs De Ridder. Ament was helped up by Ja'Kobi Gillespie but walked over to the Tennessee bench for the media timeout on his own power after initially looking down at his ankle.

The Volunteers lead 42-37 with 15:46 to go. Both teams have each hit two shots from the field to start the second half.

Nate Ament starts second half scoring

It's the Volunteers to score first in the second half as Nate Ament hits a mid-range jumper just in front of the 3-point line. Tennessee now leads 38-31.

Second half starting between Virginia-Tennessee

Both teams have come back out on the floor here at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The first few minutes of the second half will be telling about whether the adjustments Ryan Odom and Co. made in the locker room at halftime are working. Virginia needs to build a presence inside the paint, or at a minimum get some mid-range shots going, if it wants to advance.

Tennessee leads Virginia at halftime

The main takeaway from the first half was Tennessee's length, size and physicality. All three of those aspects of the Volunteers' roster have them leading 3-seed Virginia 36-31 going into halftime.

The Cavaliers had just five made shots from the field that weren't 3-pointers in the first half. They were outscored 18-8 inside the paint by the Volunteers, and had four shots blocked around the basket.

Virginia was able to get a rather easy bucket inside the paint with 24 seconds left in the half but that was because Thijs De Ridder fed the ball to Ugonna Onyenso with no one around De Ridder in the paint since Tennessee was starting to go into transition.

Tennessee is 20 minutes away from an upset and a fourth straight trip to the Sweet 16. Bishop Boswell leads the Volunteers with nine points, while Jacari White leads the Cavaliers with 10.

Felix Okpara dunk extends Tennessee lead

Ja'Kobi Gillespie finds a wide-open Felix Okpara near the basket, and Okpara finishes the alley-oop pass for the emphatic dunk. The Vols now have 16 points inside the paint compared to Virginia's six.

Tennessee has now 4-of-5 in its last shot attempts from the field.

Virginia cuts into deficit, ends scoreless drought

A layup from Chance Mallory ends a lengthy scoring drought for Virginia. It's just the eighth made shot from the field for the Cavaliers, who are now 8-of-22 from the field.

Nate Ament gets called for the foul just before the under-eight media timeout. Tennessee leads by six points at 28-22 with 5:47 to go until halftime.

Ja'Kobi Gillespie hits 3-pointer on Tennessee extended run

Tennessee reclaims the lead at 23-20 with 8:06 to go until halftime thanks to a 3-pointer from the top of the key from Ja'Kobi Gillespie. The Volunteers get multiple stops on the defensive end down on the other side of the court.

Gillespie's 3-pointer seems to be what Rick Barnes' squad needed to start breaking this game open, as the Volunteers have extended their run to 12-0 run in the last 4:11.

Virginia hasn't scored in the last 5:19 and are 2-of-10 in its last shot attempts from the floor.

Tennessee size giving Virginia trouble

Tennessee's size and height are continuing to give Virginia trouble inside and around the paint. The Volunteers are outscoring the Cavaliers 12-4 inside the paint following Jaylen Carey's layup. Then, on the next possession, Nate Ament squats Sam Lewis' layup attempt out of bounds towards the Tennessee band.

The game is tied 20-20 with 9:34 to go after UVA misses two free throws.

Virginia getting hot from deep

Virginia is beginning to feel it from deep, as it hits three straight 3-pointers — two coming from Jacari White — to take a 20-16 lead over Tennessee going into the under-12 media timeout. Ryan Odom's squad has now made four of their last five shots from the field.

The Cavaliers are keeping themselves in this one early on thanks to the 3-point game. They are 5-of-11 from deep, and have just four points inside the paint.

Jacari White gives Virginia lead with 3-pointers

Jacari White picks up where he left off in Friday's first round win over Wright State for Virginia, as he drains back-to-back 3-pointers in front of Tennessee's bench to give the Cavaliers the lead at 17-14. White also had a really smooth under-the-basket layup for his first shot of the night a few minutes ago.

Virginia is keeping itself in this one with its 3-point shooting early on.

Tennessee leads early at first media timeout

J.P. Estrella draws the foul as Virginia drives to the basket, which leads to the game's first media timeout stoppage.

Both teams are still trying to find their rhythm on offense. Tennessee is 5-of-11 shooting to start the game, while Virginia is 3-of-8 from the field.

The Vols have hit a pair of 3-pointers to take the early 12-8 lead with 14:55 to go in the first half. Thijs De Ridder is off to a nice start for Virginia, as he has five of its first eight points and two rebounds at the glass.

Nate Ament hits first shot of game

Nate Ament drains a 3-pointer from the corner on his first shot attempt of the game. He extends Tennessee's lead to 6-2 with 18:30 to go in the first half. Vols are 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to start.

Underway in Philly, Tennessee wins tip

The Volunteers win the opening tip-off with Ja'Kobi Gillespie getting the ball, and we are underway at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Volunteers are wearing their Tennessee Orange road uniform, while the Cavaliers are wearing their home whites.

Tennessee scores quickly with a 3-pointer from Bishop Boswell. Thijs De Ridder responds with a second-chance layup inside the paint for Virginia. It's 3-2 Vols early.

Who is Thijs De Ridder? Meet Virginia basketball's 23-year-old freshman

Thijs De Ridder is Virginia's 23-year-old freshman from Belgium who has professional basketball playing experience overseas in Spain.

He was named to the All-ACC first team and all-rookie teams, and entered the Men's NCAA Tournament as the Cavaliers' leading scorer at 15.5 points per game. Though De Ridder hails from Brasschaat, Belgium, he did know a little bit about March Madness before Virginia's first-round win over Wright State. … Including the great tradition of filling out brackets.

"When I was 17 and younger, I thought it was another tournament like others. I did some brackets when I was younger, but that was just for fun," De Ridder told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. "Every time (there was) an American guy on my team (overseas), they always talked about March Madness. Now that I'm here, it's such an organization, and it just made me really excited to play here. Hopefully, we can do some great stuff."

He finished in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds in addition to two assists in Virginia's win vs. Wright State.

Who did Virginia beat to advance to the second round of March Madness?

The Cavaliers held off a potential upset and defeated 14-seed Wright State in the first round of the Men's NCAA Tournament on Friday, 83-72.

Jacari White led the way for Virginia with 26 points, while Sam Lewis added 12 and Malik Thomas added 11. De Ridder also finished in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds in addition to two assists.

The Cavaliers' win marked their first in March Madness since they won it all in 2019. It ended a 0-3 stretch in their last three trips to March Madness.

∎ Wynton Jackson, Knoxville News Sentinel:Virginia 71, Tennessee 66

Ament's questionable status swings our prediction towards Virginia. The Cavaliers had one of the best defenses in the ACC, and if Tennessee's star freshman isn't at his best, it's tough to see how the Vols continue their hot shooting. They shot 53% from the floor and 45% from 3-point range against the RedHawks. Tennessee's defense always keeps games close, but it may not have enough offensive juice to make a fourth straight Sweet 16.

Nate Ament injury update: Will Vols freshman star play today vs Virginia?

All-SEC freshman Nate Ament had his first scoreless game of the season in the 78-56 win against Miami (Ohio) in the first round.

Ament is still dealing with soreness from the high ankle sprain he suffered against Missouri on Feb. 24. He still expects to play against Virginia and throughout the rest of the NCAA Tournament.

"There's no chance I'd sit out a March Madness game," he said . "It's about what can we do to get back to 100%, or as close to it as we can."

Nate Ament 2026 NBA Draft, mock draft prediction

No. 11 overall to Portland Trail Blazers

Kalbrosky's Analysis:

After a relatively slow and inefficient start to the season, Tennessee freshman Nate Ament is starting to realize some of his lofty expectations. The freshman averaged 21.6 points per game while shooting 38.9 percent on 3-pointers during a 13-game stretch before an injury against Alabama on Feb. 28. The All-SEC forward then had 27 points (4-of-6 on 3-pointers) with eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal against Auburn on March 12. It will only take one team to fall in love with Ament and given so much of what he brings to the table cannot be taught, that team is probably picking fairly early in the lottery.
