The Houston Texans have exhausted the benefit of the doubt. Sunday's 34-30 loss to the Dallas Cowboys dropped them to 0-4, turning another promising afternoon into an urgent search for accountability.

CJ Stroud threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, yet CeeDee Lamb's winning touchdown with 40 seconds remaining erased that effort. Houston cannot keep wasting performances that should produce victories.
Coaching deserves scrutiny, but three Texans stand out for their contributions to the offensive stagnation and costly defensive mistakes behind this start.

David Montgomery must give the Texans more on the ground
David Montgomery has produced 127 rushing yards on 47 carries through four games, averaging just 2.7 yards per attempt. His last three outings yielded 10, 33, and 24 rushing yards.

That production leaves the Texans without a dependable counterweight to Stroud. Montgomery has yet to average more than 3.0 yards per carry in a game this season, making sustained offensive balance difficult.
The blocking deserves substantial blame. Defenders have frequently reached Montgomery before he can build momentum, limiting his opportunities to turn routine carries into productive gains. The entire rushing operation needs improvement.
Montgomery's 19-yard gain off a lateral helped set up a late touchdown against the Cowboys, but the Texans need more consistent production from their veteran running back. He deserves a share of the blame for the rushing struggles, even as poor blocking continues to limit his opportunities.
Keylan Rutledge's protection struggles keep hurting the Texans
Rookie left guard Keylan Rutledge has contributed to the blocking failures that keep undermining the Texans. His mistakes have carried consequences in both short-yardage situations and pass protection.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Dexter Lawrence split Rutledge and center Evan Brown to stop Montgomery on fourth-and-inches. Brown needed to maintain the double-team, making that failed assignment a shared breakdown rather than a play that belonged entirely on Rutledge.
The problem resurfaced against the Cowboys. Quinnen Williams beat Rutledge for a fourth-quarter sack that helped force a punt while the Texans trailed 27-23. Rutledge also committed a false start later in the quarter, adding another obstacle for an offense trying to reclaim the lead.
Rookie growing pains are understandable, and responsibility for the entire line cannot fall on one guard. However, the Texans need Rutledge to hold up in critical situations. Interior breakdowns disrupt passing lanes, compromise rushing opportunities, and make Stroud's job considerably harder.
Kamari Lassiter's Cowboys collapse carries significant weight
Kamari Lassiter's inclusion rests heavily on Week 4. One damaging afternoon should not rewrite his first three games, but its impact on the Texans reaching 0-4 demands accountability.

Lassiter struggled in coverage and committed three accepted penalties. His third-quarter pass interference and fourth-down defensive hold gave the Cowboys additional opportunities to sustain their comeback.

Those mistakes extended possessions when Houston needed its secondary to get off the field. A defense cannot consistently survive both explosive completions and penalties that erase potential stops, especially against an offense capable of scoring quickly.
Jalen Pitre covered Lamb on the winning touchdown , but Lassiter's earlier mistakes helped put the Cowboys in position to complete their comeback. Houston needs Lassiter to tighten his coverage and eliminate costly penalties before another close game slips away.
