The Houston Texans are still looking to improve even as training camp is underway. The Texans worked out two running backs one NFL insider.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Texans worked out two players before the weekend. Schefter wrote the following on social media.
"Houston tried out veteran RBs Hassan Haskins and Alexander Mattison ."
Houston Texans on SI writer Jared Koch discussed what the two players would bring to the Houston offense. Here's some of what he had to say.
"The guy that sticks out within the two free agents is Alexander Mattison. The 28-year-old running back has played six years in the NFL between the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders , having put up over 2,700 rushing yards during his time in the league.
Last season, though, Mattison's season was halted before it even started. He suffered a fractured and dislocated neck during a preseason game in August with the Miami Dolphins , effectively ending his season.
Given that he's back in Houston for a workout, though, he might be back healthy before the 2026 season, and looking for a new opportunity to sign somewhere close to a year after his scary injury."
In Mattison, the Texans are getting a somewhat proven player and not a novice. Mattison knows what is required to be effective in the National Football League. Now, he's looking for a place where he can play long term.
It is admirable to work out the two players despite having a strong starter already in David Montgomery . A roster is never perfect, and the Texans have no intention of standing idle in making their best team possible. Houston has urgency given it has perhaps its best roster in franchise history set to take the field for 2026.
The Texans would be making good use of their resources should they add a capable backup option for Week 1. That's not to say that their current backups are substandard, but that every good backup option strengthens Houston's prospects in the upcoming season.
Where Mattison and Woody Marks would tier in the running back room is unknown. Even so, another back could fortify the Texans against losing due to injury.
The Texans may not be done adding players to their roster for the year. Keep an eye on the running back position as Houston looks to make what was once a weakness a strength for 2026.
