Texas A&M football won't replace Albert Regis and Tyler Onyedim with one player, but CJ Mims could become the muscle holding the Aggies ' rebuilt defensive interior together in 2026.
The North Carolina transfer arrives in College Station with the size, experience and attitude needed for life in the SEC trenches.

At 6-2 and 312 pounds, Mims isn't coming to chase highlight-reel sacks every Saturday. His value starts with absorbing double teams, clogging rushing lanes and making opposing offensive lines work for every inch.
That role may not be glamorous, but Mike Elko's defense needs somebody willing to own it.
Mims started nine of the 12 games he played for North Carolina in 2025, finishing with 42 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
He also logged 371 snaps for the Tar Heels , giving him meaningful experience in different fronts and situations.

That workload matters for an Aggies defense replacing both starting defensive tackles and searching for dependable early-down answers.
Before his season at North Carolina, Mims spent three years at East Carolina .
He appeared in 25 games for the Pirates and recorded 37 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a quarterback hurry.
He wasn't a highly decorated recruit coming out of New Bern, North Carolina. In the 2025 transfer class, 247Sports ranked Mims No. 230 overall and No. 44 among players at his position.
None of that changes what Texas A&M needs from him now.
The Aggies don't need Mims to become an All-American overnight. They need him to be difficult to move, disciplined against the run and consistent enough to keep the linebackers behind him clean.

In a league loaded with powerful rushing attacks and massive offensive lines, that kind of reliability can decide whether a defense controls first down or spends the afternoon scrambling.
Texas A&M will likely use a heavy rotation inside early in the season, allowing several defensive tackles to compete for snaps.
Mims should have every opportunity to claim a major piece of that rotation, especially in short-yardage situations and against run-heavy opponents.

He may not be the flashiest newcomer on the roster, but CJ Mims could become one of the most important.
If he gives the Aggies a sturdy anchor in the middle, Elko's defense will have a much better chance to remain disruptive while the rest of the interior rotation develops.
