Jalen Rose has never been the type to bite his tongue or play it safe for the sake of a comfortable soundbite. As an analyst, he carries himself with unflinching confidence, suggesting he has already weighed the consequences of his words.
Every now and then, Rose would touch on topics such as racism and social injustice with passion and firmness. In fact, Jalen recently stirred the pot yet again during an appearance on the "Joe and Jada" podcast.
In the episode, the former Indiana Pacers star shared his intriguing perspective on why predominantly Black mainstream leagues such as the NBA and NFL are governed by strict salary caps, while white-led sports operate without that same ceiling.
"The only sports that have salary caps are black-led. First off, that's basketball and football," Jalen said . "Those are the only sports with salary caps. Baseball, golf, NASCAR, tennis, you can keep naming. They do not have a salary. That's the first thing. It's correct."
"The second thing is they have no after high school restriction. And so that's a residue of slavery. It's because we're going to get money off of you for multiple years for free," he added.
Jalen also exposed the truth about inequality in sports broadcasting
Truth be told, it's hard to call Rose a bitter critic when you look at his ledger. During his 13-year NBA career, "Jinx" reportedly earned over $102 million in player salary. He then quickly transitioned to broadcasting and became one of the most prominent analysts of his time.
Yet, Jalen insists that his personal success hasn't blinded him to the discrepancies and disparities around him. According to Rose, inequality is also rampant in broadcasting , but not everyone notices it.
Rose once pointed out that while it seems like there's diversity in every sports talk show because of the existence of Black former athletes, it's the white professionals who still receive better treatment and more credit.
"Players are the minority in terms of talent on sports television," he claimed . "For example, basketball and football, college and professional, are predominantly Black. So, when you talk about those sports, you have to have one Black player on set. It legitimizes and balances the conversation. So, in hiring, their balance is to have one white host."
"But, as players get more expensive, networks think they can recycle talent and rinse and repeat. Meanwhile, the host has their name on the shows, or in the descriptions or on the TV Guides, and keeps the job forever while making four times the money that the player they're asking the question makes; When you're watching a sports show from now on, remember the host makes more than the players," he added.

Jalen's take is a hot talking point
Rose is well aware of what exactly happens when he touches a nerve. He knew that his unfiltered takes could spark debates and result in backlash, but he didn't seem to want to be told to just "shut up and dribble" or, in his current situation, "shut up and broadcast."
For Jalen, publicly voicing his views and opinions on sensitive issues is part of his responsibility as an American citizen. That being said, it's no surprise that Rose's latest remarks on the salary cap would get fans divided once again.
