The Detroit Tigers should be building their 2027 outfield plans around Riley Greene and Max Clark, but there are questions about the group beyond those two. Wenceel Pérez, Matt Vierling and Parker Meadows have dealt with inconsistent play and injuries, making it difficult for Detroit to establish a dependable alignment. Javier Báez's willingness to move into the outfield has helped cover those gaps, but the Tigers need a more reliable plan going forward.
Greene's bat is the reason he remains a fixture in the lineup, while his minus-11 defensive runs saved illustrates an area Detroit needs to account for when assembling the rest of its outfield. Zach McKinstry, despite the complaints about his playing time, provided considerable defensive value with 14 DRS in 465⅓ outfield innings. Ben Malgeri has shown promise, but his exact role in 2027 remains uncertain.

That leaves Detroit with a need that Clark alone should not be expected to address. The Tigers need another established hitter, but they also need to consider how that addition would fit defensively alongside Greene and the rest of the group.
The offensive numbers support making a move. Detroit's outfield hit .230/.304/.383 i n 2026, ranking 27th in batting average, 26th in on-base percentage and 25th in slugging among the 30 clubs. Its 92 wRC+ also ranked 26th, placing its offensive production roughly 8% below league average after adjustments for league and ballpark.
The underlying numbers offer little reason to attribute those results primarily to bad luck. Detroit's outfield produced a .303 weighted on-base average compared with a .307 expected mark, while its .383 slugging percentage nearly matched its .380 expected slugging percentage. Improving the quality of the group's plate appearances should be an offseason priority.
Seiya Suzuki, Randy Arozarena and Taylor Ward offer three different possibilities in the upcoming free-agent class. Suzuki and Arozarena provide stronger cases for an immediate offensive upgrade, while Ward would require a more cautious evaluation of his ability to rebound. These are potential fits rather than reports of interest from Detroit. I should start with the disclaimer that while the Tigers reportedly are not going to spend whenever the offseason starts, these options are veteran bats, which is something I believe this team has needed for a while.

Seiya Suzuki brings an established record against lefties
Suzuki would be a logical starting point because his success against left-handed pitching extends beyond one season. Across his first five major league seasons, he hit .279/.381/.485 against lefties, producing an .866 OPS with 29 home runs in 776 plate appearances. His 19.2% strikeout rate in those matchups gives Detroit another useful consideration alongside his power and ability to reach base.
He improved on that production in 2026, batting .309/.429/.537 with eight home runs against left-handers. Suzuki drew 29 walks against 32 strikeouts in 168 plate appearances, combining extra-base damage with an ability to extend innings. His strikeout rate remained essentially unchanged at 19.0%, even as his offensive production increased.
Suzuki also produced against right-handers, posting a .797 OPS with 18 home runs in 466 plate appearances in 2026. That supports considering him for an everyday role, with his production against lefties serving as an additional strength.

For Detroit, the benefit would be another hitter capable of getting on base and producing extra-base hits without requiring a favorable matchup to remain in the lineup. The Tigers would need to determine his defensive assignment and how his playing time would overlap with Kerry Carpenter's opportunities in the outfield and at designated hitter.
That fit deserves attention, particularly with Greene already occupying a regular role. Still, Detroit should be willing to work through those decisions if its evaluation points to a meaningful improvement in everyday production.
Randy Arozarena's improvement against righties adds to his appeal
Arozarena's splits offer a strong case for helping Detroit against either pitching hand. He hit .306/.386/.565 against lefties in 2026, with 11 home runs in 197 plate appearances. Against right-handers, he hit .271/.378/.450 with 15 home runs in 473 plate appearances, maintaining nearly the same on-base percentage between the two matchups.

His production against righties is especially relevant when considering an everyday role. Arozarena's .829 OPS in those matchups exceeded his career .759 mark, while his strikeout rate fell from a career rate of 25.8% to 22.4% in 2026. Those career totals include his latest season, but the comparison still shows how much better he performed against right-handers this year.
Roughly 71% of his plate appearances came against right-handed pitching, so that improvement covered most of his opportunities. For a Detroit outfield that finished with a .304 on-base percentage, adding someone who reached base at a strong rate against both sides would address a clear weakness.
The question is how much of that improvement the Tigers would expect to carry forward. One season does not guarantee the same results throughout a new contract, and Detroit would need to weigh his individual defense and expected production against the length and cost of a deal.
Arozarena's offensive case is strong enough to justify that evaluation. His 2026 performance suggests a player who could improve the lineup throughout the week, rather than provide help only when a left-hander starts.

Taylor Ward would require a convincing rebound case
Ward belongs in a different part of the discussion. He finished 2026 batting .225/.359/.311 with seven home runs in 143 games, leaving a substantial gap between his ability to reach base and his power production. His on-base percentage offers something useful, but his overall performance makes him a more uncertain answer than Suzuki or Arozarena.
Detroit would need to understand the decline in power and identify evidence that it could return. A shorter or less expensive contract could make Ward worth considering, depending on how his market develops, but that would represent a bet on improvement.
The Tigers should avoid treating affordability as proof that a player addresses their needs. Ward could become a reasonable option under the right circumstances, but adding another right-handed hitter would accomplish little if the outfield's overall production remained near the bottom of the league.

Detroit must consider the entire defensive alignment
The defensive numbers reinforce why the decision cannot be based on hitting alone. Detroit finished with minus-13 defensive runs saved in left field, minus-six in center and plus-five in right, a combined minus-14 across those positional columns. The club's plus-41 team total does not eliminate the weaknesses within that outfield breakdown.
The leaderboard also credited Detroit with plus-12 runs for outfield positioning, listed separately from the positional figures. That was a positive contribution, but it should not be mistaken for the team's complete outfield defensive performance. Left and center field still finished below average in their positional results.
McKinstry's contribution shows why defensive value needs to remain part of the conversation, even when a player's presence in the lineup draws criticism. At the same time, Detroit needs enough offense from its regular outfielders that it is not continually choosing between production at the plate and coverage in the field.

Suzuki, Arozarena and Ward must each be evaluated on their individual defensive results and how they would fit alongside Greene, Carpenter and eventually Clark. Their current teams' defensive totals cannot establish that any of them would improve Detroit's fielding, and an offensive upgrade should not automatically be described as a defensive one.
I would begin with Suzuki and Arozarena because their recent production offers the strongest case for improving the everyday lineup. Ward would remain a more conditional option, with the final decision depending on contract terms, individual defense and the resulting distribution of playing time.
The Tigers have enough evidence to justify pursuing established help. Clark can contribute to a better outfield, but Detroit should build a group that allows him to develop while improving its chances to score runs and prevent them. His arrival should complement the offseason plan rather than serve as the entire answer. Scott Harris said they will go internal but in order for this team to get to the next level, an investment must be made in the outfield.
