- Three Washington Commanders Who Need to Prove Their Value in 2026
The Washington Commanders released their updated 53-man roster on Tuesday, and a few players need to prove themselves quickly or could risk losing their spots on the team.

The former 2024 third-round pick has been a disappointment for the Commanders so far. During his rookie season, he finished with just 168 receiving yards and no touchdowns. Last season, there was hope he could make a jump, but he missed eight games due to injury and totaled only 203 receiving yards. He did, however, catch three touchdowns and saw his role increase in the return game, recording nearly 800 kickoff-return yards on just 26 attempts.

Coming into this season, Washington's wide receiver room is much deeper. McCaffrey has Terry McLaurin , Stefon Diggs , Treylon Burks , Dyami Brown , Antonio Williams and Jaylin Lane all ahead of him on the depth chart. McCaffrey's status was telling in this year's final preseason game, when he was the only receiver on this 53-man roster to play deep into the game. That only added to the speculation that McCaffrey could be cut.
But McCaffrey is still here, and now he has to prove his value. He'll need to make an impact on kickoff returns and improve as a receiver to keep his spot.
2. Kain Medrano (LB)

The former 2025 sixth-round pick has yet to make much of an impact in Washington. Medrano appeared in just nine games as a rookie and finished the season with five total tackles and one fumble recovery. He played significantly more snaps on special teams, where he showed his speed and athleticism from time to time, but never made a significant impact.

You can't expect too much from a sixth-round pick early in his career, but for his own sake, Medrano needs to produce more if he wants to become more than a special-teams player for this team. The Commanders' linebacker room is loaded with talent, including Frankie Luvu , Sonny Styles , Leo Chenal and Jordan Magee . With that kind of competition, Medrano has very little room for error as he enters his second season.
3. Percy Butler (FS)

It seems like Butler's time in Washington is beginning to run out. It started with a limited role as a rookie, mainly on special teams, but his role gradually expanded on defense. In his second season, he recorded a career-high 47 total tackles and eight passes defended. In his third year, he added a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss.

But then came last season, when Butler posted career lows across the board, finishing with just 14 total tackles and no passes defended or tackles for loss.
Now, he sits third on the depth chart at free safety behind Jeremy Reaves , who was recently named a team captain, and Quan Martin , who flashed during the preseason with two interceptions. Butler should still see plenty of action on special teams, as he has throughout his NFL career, but with each season, it seems like his role continues to get smaller.
He'll need to turn things around quickly or risk becoming expendable as Washington looks toward younger and cheaper options.
With the regular season now here, all three players have something to prove. Whether it's McCaffrey making an impact in the return game, Medrano carving out a role on defense or Butler finding his way back onto the field, the margin for error is small. If they can't make their presence felt early, the Commanders could eventually look elsewhere.
