The Bruins didn’t play on Thursday, but they had plenty to pay attention to as games around the NHL impacted their postseason position.
Boston could have clinched a playoff berth if everything had gone their way on Thursday, but Detroit and the New York Islanders each won, at least temporarily preventing the Bruins from clinching a playoff berth .
A Boston win in any of their three games, or two overtime losses clinches a playoff berth with no help. The Bruins need five points to clinch the No. 1 wild card without help.

Montreal ’s win over Tampa eliminated the Bruins from any chance of moving up in the Atlantic Division standings. Their only path to the playoffs is as a wild card.

Who could Bruins face in the playoffs
Let’s assume that if they get in, it will be as the first or second wild card. That means facing a division winner. That’s one of four potential teams.
1. Carolina— The Hurricanes have clinched the Metro. Currently the favorite to be the No. 1 seed in the East, Boston would have to drop to the No. 2 wild card to face them if that holds.
2. Buffalo—The Atlantic is going to come down to the wire. The Sabres lead, but both Montreal and Tampa have a game in hand on them. Buffalo’s 41 regulation wins vs. 33 for Montreal and 39 for Tampa could be the determining tie-breaker.
3. Montreal— Beating the Lightning on Thursday pushed the Canadiens ahead of Tampa. They’d have to pass Buffalo to potentially face the Bruins.
3. Tampa— If the Bruins don’t want to face Tampa in the playoffs, they’d help themselves by beating them on Saturday.
