The Detroit Tigers have been without Javier Baez and Gleyber Torres in the lineup, as both players are on the IL with their own respective injuries. With July finally here, the club was hoping to have a clearer timeline of recovery. However, the latest updates keep their return dates completely unknown.
In the latest injury updates for Baez and Torres on MLB.com, it's said that both of their expected return dates are TBD . However, each is making progress and taking the necessary steps to eventually return to the field.
Javier Baez , who is dealing with a right ankle sprain, has been on the 10-day IL since April 29. While his return date is unknown, the injury update claims that the 33-year-old slugger has "Initiated a hitting and running program."
It's been a frustrating campaign for Baez, as he's only appeared in 24 games so far this season. When healthy, the 13-year veteran looked solid at the plate, recording 20 hits, two home runs, and six RBIs through 78 at-bats, giving him a .256 batting average and .280 OBP.
As for Gleyber Torres , the nine-year veteran has only been on the 10-day IL since June 17 (retroactive to June 16) with a left oblique strain. While the Tigers don't know when he could come back to the lineup, it appears Torres is at least preparing for a rehab assignment. "Completing a running progression along with rehab exercises. Not ready to resume hitting."
The Tigers will want Torres back in the lineup sooner rather than later, as he has been solid throughout the 2026 season when healthy. Through 157 at-bats so far this year, the 29-year-old infielder owns a .280 batting average and .395 OBP while totaling 44 hits, four home runs, and 18 RBIs.
Detroit is scheduled to take on the New York Yankees on Wednesday. James Outman is filling in at center field once again, while the Tigers are starting Zach McKinstry at second base.
