The Detroit Tigers had a disastrous Tuesday, as Framber Valdez allowed 10 runs in 3+ innings before being ejected . They are hoping to turn it around on Wednesday and avoid a home sweep against the Boston Red Sox . But before the game, the Tigers placed Gleyber Torres on the IL with an oblique injury, just continuing the bad news.
"Tigers roster moves: Gleyber Torres placed on 10-day injured list with left oblique strain. Jace Jung recalled from Triple-A Toledo," Evan Petzold with the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Tigers started the series by placing Tarik Skubal on the injured list with an elbow injury. So, needless to say, it's already been a week to forget in the Motor City. Torres is in his second season with the Tigers after a seven-year run with the New York Yankees . In 32 games this year, the second baseman has a .259 batting average and a .711 OPS.
Torres has played at least 140 games in each of the last five seasons, so durability has been a skill for him. An oblique injury can linger and impact a player's swing, but the hope is that Detroit caught this early. Everyone is talking about Skubal's free agency regarding his injury, but the same could be said for Torres . He is currently playing on a qualifying offer.
The Tigers have called up Jace Jung to replace Torres on the MLB roster. He has only played 57 games in the majors with a dreadful .553 OPS. In 28 games with the AAA Toledo Mud Hens this season, Jung has a .721 OPS, so he can hit professional pitching. He has another chance to make a statement in Detroit, and it comes at a time where the team needs a jolt.
The Tigers are tied for fourth in the AL with an 18-19 record. A few wins would go a long way, starting with Wednesday's matchup against the Red Sox.
