The Tigers agreed to an eight-year , $150 million extension with 21-year-old infielder Kevin McGonigle, the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball. The deal begins in 2027 and could reach $160 million with incentives. It marks the largest guaranteed contract ever for a player with fewer than 100 days of service time.
McGonigle earned the deal with an impressive start to his rookie season. Through 17 games, he is hitting .311 with a .909 OPS, consistently reaching base and showing advanced plate discipline. His early production has quickly established him as a centerpiece of the Tigers' lineup.
The Tigers shared the rookie shortstop's reaction to the extension on X, formerly Twitter, showcasing his excitement about committing to the organization long-term.

"This is just the beginning. I'm super excited for this fanbase and this city. I'm looking forward to falling in love with this place even more."
The extension reflects a broader trend across Major League Baseball, as teams increasingly secure young talent before arbitration and free agency. For Detroit, the deal provides cost certainty while establishing McGonigle as a foundational piece of the organization's future.
The timing also underscores the organization's confidence in his development. McGonigle has already demonstrated the ability to produce at a high level, and his presence now shapes both the present and future of the roster.
Ultimately, the Tigers have made their vision clear. They believe the rookie shortstop can help lead the franchise to further prominence, and his words reflect that confidence. The club snapped a nine-year postseason drought and reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Now, both the team and its young shortstop look to go further this October.
