On Friday, Navy Midshipmen took on the UAB Blazers . After their Week 2 loss to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sept. 12, there were a lot of expectations for the program to bounce back.
Navy Midshipmen were leading in the third quarter of the game. However, the tables turned in favor of UAB in the fourth quarter. They secured a 24-20 victory to improve their record to 2-2.
After the final whistle, fans took to social media to criticize and call out coach Brian Newberry's team.
"Navy, that was the worst fourth-quarter performance I think I've ever witnessed. It may be time to abolish your football program after that," one fan commented.
"Sack every single coach on the Navy football team, all of them should be working in McDonald's. It's embarrassing to the special forces of America," another fan said.
Here are a few other reactions:
After a scoreless first quarter, UAB took a 7-0 lead after Bam McReynolds' 10-yard rushing TD. However, Navy Midshipmen quarterback Jackson Gutierrez leveled the game with a four-yard rushing TD of his own.
The first half ended with the UAB Blazers securing a 17-13 lead. In the third quarter, running back Vic Listorti scored a seven-yard rushing TD. Nolan Bartley converted the extra point to give Newberry and his team a 20-17 lead.
However, Bam McReynolds capitalized on a Navy turnover. This ended with him scoring a 48-yard rushing TD and sealing the win for the UAB Blazers.
From 2019 to 2022, Brian Newberry served as the defensive coordinator of the football program. In Dec. 2022, he was promoted to head coach after the team parted ways with Ken Niumatalolo after 15 seasons.
During his debut campaign, Newberry could only muster a 5-7 (4-4 AAC) record with the Navy Midshipmen. The team improved in his second year, finishing with a 10-3 (6-2 AAC) record and an Armed Forces Bowl victory over Oklahoma . Last season, they put up an 11-2 (7-1 AAC) record and a Liberty Bowl victory over Cincinnati .
The Navy Midshipmen will next face the Air Force Falcons on Oct. 3
