In the plethora of moves to cut the roster to 53 players on Sunday, the Tennessee Titans made medical decisions on two players that will impact the start of the season. Tennessee places cornerback Joshua Williams (pec) and linebacker Dorian Mausi (undisclosed) on injured reserve (IR), designated for return.
The move allows Tennessee to keep its roster intact while waiting for the potential return of two key depth and special-teams pieces. How long Williams and Mausi will be out remains to be seen, but this designation means they will be off the field for at least the first four games of the regular season.
Williams originally injured his pec during offseason workouts, but aggravated it against the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason and has been held out of practice since. Head coach Robert Saleh pointed to this as an option following the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears .
An offseason signee from the Kansas City Chiefs , Tennessee looked at Williams as a viable third outside cornerback and now could be in the market to add some depth.
Mausi is a different animal. A special teams standout, he suffered an undisclosed injury against the 49ers and has been in and out of practice. The Titans did keep five linebackers on the initial roster, but his loss will be felt more by special teams coordinator John Fassel, who praised Mausi earlier in training camp.
