The redemption arc of Tony Rojas ' career has come full circle as Penn State' s most passionate leader has been receiving multiple accolades throughout his career. Now, he has received another. On Thursday, it was announced that Rojas would be a semifinalist for the Butkus Award . It feels like a long time coming for someone who has meant so much for the program, but has also gone through so much in his career.
Just last season, there was doubt if Tony Rojas would ever play for the Nittany Lions again. After a season-ending knee injury in a season where the Nittany Lions unraveled, Rojas' loyalty to the blue and white was questioned. Maybe due to Penn State's failure to break through, he would transfer to a contender. However, even through the firing of James Franklin, the hire of Matt Campbell, and the countless transfers, Tony Rojas remained with the blue and white. Penn State fans will be happy to say that even in a trying season, it has paid off.
Rojas has had another stellar individual season, with 56 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. He has unquestionably been the leader of this Penn State squad despite its struggles. He also has added two interceptions to his game as well, showcasing his well-rounded game that has kept Penn State fans interested in the season.
In terms of the Butkus Award, Penn State has actually fared relatively well. Both LaVar Arrington and Paul Posluszny won the award, and Micah Parsons was the last Penn State player to be named a finalist for the award. Hopefully, Rojas will be named one as well. Finalists will be named November 20, with the winner being announced on December 7.
