- Wayne Rooney fury as Bosnia keeper avoids red card: ‘He could have knocked him out’
Red cards aplenty on the opening night but why was there no red card on the second night? If bewilderment followed the sendings-off when Mexico faced South Africa , the puzzlement continued after Canada and Bosnia took a point each in Toronto.
Everything revolved around a moment in the second half when Tani Oluwaseyi surged on to a through ball. He was fractionally offside but carried on chasing – out came Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj who got there first, made a big punch to clear but then connected with the Canada striker's head.
VAR, of course, analysed everything and took no action but it was one of those situations which created debate, so much so that in Salford, BBC pundit Wayne Rooney was incensed that Vasilj had not been banished.
"It's a red card," Rooney thundered to former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann, who made it clear that he saw nothing wrong with the incident.
"Forget the offside," Rooney continued. "We have seen it before, when players have gone through and the whistle has gone. They have been fouled and it has been a red card. I just think it is a very dangerous play.
"I know [Vasilj] wins the ball but he follows through. He hits him in the temple! That's the worst place you can be hit. You can get knocked out. [Oluwaseyi] might come back and in a week's time he could have delayed concussion. Look at his neck. That's a clear red card."
It was seemingly the only thing that wasn't red on the day. A sea of red descended on the stadium in Toronto, a wave of red washed over Bosnia in a thrilling second period and they only avoided red faces because of some remarkable defending from Sead Kolasinac, the former Arsenal defender.
Expectations in Canada are big, even though they don't have any World Cup pedigree. They had lost all of their previous six games at the two tournaments at which they had competed, scoring two goals and leading for a mere 34 minutes.
When Jovo Lukic nipped into the six-yard area in the 21st minute to meet a flick on from Kolasinac, the odds on loss number seven were short. Jesse Marsch, Canada's head coach, was frustrated by his side's timid performance, particularly as they had come out of the blocks so quickly.
Fervour in a stadium, however, can do strange things. Rather than melting, Canada began to play again. They ended the first period strongly and came out invigorated in the second half, every attack demanding the supporters invest a little bit more emotion.
And how Canada responded. They thought they had levelled in the 52nd minute when a slick interchange of passing ended with Stephen Eustáquio nudging in Jonathan David , who beat Vasilj, but Kolasinac made an exceptional clearance, firing the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Was this a sign that it was all destined to end in frustration and another defeat? Not a bit of it. Canada went on and in the 78th minute, Cyle Larin , the Southampton forward, kept his cool when it mattered and scored the goal that made a little bit of history and invited a nation to keep dreaming.
The goal sparked wild celebrations in the stands, including from Hollywood star and Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds who was born in Vancouver.
"We felt like we had them," said Marsch. "I told them to put their foot on the jugular and go for the goal. We were tentative in the first half. I was disappointed with that. It was different in the second half. It's a really big point for us but we have to learn."
10:20pm
Canada coach Jesse Marsch was left less than impressed with his side's early efforts.
He said after the draw: "We felt like we had them. You know like we were starting to push the game, the subs came on and made a big difference. We could see that they were fading.
"I'm disappointed with the first half. I felt we were tentative - we didn't play as aggressively as I would have liked. We have got to find a way when we want to play as intensely and be hard to play against that we actually do it. We talked about it afterwards.
"Second half, the moment we stepped on the pitch, it was different. I told them we have got to learn these lessons, and we have got to learn from them quickly.
"We still have everything in hand and that's a big point for us to keep ourselves in the group. We have to make sure the next performance is a reflection and learning point from what we learnt today."

Here is Canada's veteran striker earning them their first point at a World Cup.
10:12pm
Another BBC pundit, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards , thinks Canada will be happy enough.
Canada did well to find a way through after looking largely toothless for much of the occasion.
Perhaps it was pressure, but perhaps it was just that they are far from the best team in the tournament.
Richards explained: "Canada were energetic in that first half and in the second half they kept it going. I feel as though they can rely on their subs. They dominated possession, Bosnia found it hard to get out at times.
"If you look at the whole performance, Canada can be really pleased."
10:10pm
Former Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney was concise in his initial reaction to the match.
He believes that the two sides will ultimately be satisified to come away with a draw in their first match.
Rooney told the BBC: "I thought it was a good game and I thought Canada were really good and did enough to win the game, but I think both teams will take a point."
10:06pm
Canada got their first point in World Cup history on Friday night as they kicked off their Group B obligations as hosts.
Both sides would have looked for three points to get their campaign underway as they target the chance to top the group and ensure a theoretically easier passage through the rest of the tournament.
However, ultimately it was a match where points were shared, with Bosnia-Herzegovina going ahead in the first half.
Jovo Lukic scored his first goal for his country on 21 minutes as he headed in a flick-on from the corner, with Jesse Marsch's side struggling to contain their opponents in a series of early set pieces.
Canada were without Alphonso David, their star left-sided player from Bayern Munich , and striker Jonathan David appeared to be struggling with his own fitness.
The Juventus man was withdrawn in the second half by Marsch as he chased an equaliser, and Cyle Larin was introduced to add a new option up front.
The 31-year-old, who is due to turn his loan spell from Mallorca to Southampton into a permanent one in the coming days, was able to make the difference when he received a pass from Ismael Kone , moved away from his marker, and fired past the keeper.
With 12 minutes of normal time remaining, the co-hosts chased a second goal but were unable to break down their obdurate opponents.
Canada will play Qatar in their next match on Friday, 19 June, while Bosnia-Herzegovina will take on Switzerland the day before. Switzerland will face Canada this Saturday.
09:59pm
Canada get their first point in World Cup history.
Bosnia get their sixth draw in a row.
Group B looks like it will be a tight one.
09:58pm
Larin has a shot blocked on the line!
The hosts are pushing hard but it might be too late now.
09:55pm
A couple of Bosnians are down and need treatment. Bosnia have a free-kick, and Gigovic will send it in.
It is ultimately cleared, and Larin is brought down by Katic. He takes a yellow.
09:53pm
Osorio comes on for Eustaquio, the captain.
There are six minutes of added time indicated.
The home fans cheer on their team.
09:50pm
Cornelius starts off a move in Bosnia's half, with the hosts starting play from a free kick in their opponent's half.
It's patient, but without much guile.
09:46pm
Kolasinac hobbles off with an injury. Burnic replaces the veteran at left-back.
09:41pmKey moments
Kone toes the ball to Larin, he spins his marker and finds space, and fires the ball past the keeper with a great finish.
The last 15 minutes or so are now teed up for a frenetic end for both teams. The substitute worked.
09:39pm
Oluwaseyi comes off, and Larin is on in his place.
A change up front could give the home side what they need to break their duck.
09:37pm
Bajraktarevic and Memic are off, while Sunjic and Alajlbegovic come on.
The Bosnians are looking to hold onto what would be a potentially vital three points.
09:31pm
Here is the drinks break. I'm going off for a Lucozade and then a Vimto (still).
09:30pm
Neither of these side will be troubling the scorers when it comes to discussing eventual winners but this is an entertaining game. You have to love, too the dress sense of Bosnia's Head Coach Sergej Barbarez, in his double-breasted blue suit and ice white t-shirt. He looks like he's arrived straight from a polo match, he just needs a glass of Pimm's and pair of shades to complete the ensemble.
09:27pm
There is obviously mounting (and yes, Mountie) frustration building here as Canada search for the equaliser. And there has also been boos whenever the TV cameras have focused in on empty seats at the stadium just a mile away from here. They are still queuing to get into this Fan Festival, so there is clearly the appetite. Yet another FIFA eff up.
09:26pm
David flashes at a shot but Katic gets a toe to it, and the ball trundles to the keeper. The hosts continue to struggle.
09:25pm
A host of changes for both sides.
Shaffelburg , Ahmed, Promise David come on for Canada. Buchanan, Miller and David are off.
Lukic and Basic off for Bosnia, Basdar and Gigovic on in their place.
09:17pm
Laryea sizes up the keeper and slides the ball past him after a swift one-touch approach from the hosts.
Kolasinac races behind him to toe the ball onto the woodwork and away, a huge intervention.
At the other end, Crepeau pulls off a great save to deny Demirovic.
09:12pm
Oluwaseyi is caught by Vasilj as the keeper fists away a bouncing ball into the box.
There is a VAR review, but the decision is that no foul took place.
09:10pm
Clint Dempsey is less than impressed by Jesse Marsch.
09:07pm
We go again.
09:04pm
Here he is.
08:52pm
The hosts are behind, and they are struggling. Sarcastic actor Ryan Reynolds is apparently in the crowd, and he will be disappointed with his country's showing so far.
08:51pm
Just spoke to a steward here at the FIFA Fan Festival and he reported that there is still a huge queue to get in. Canada are 1-0 down and half time is nigh and there are hundreds if not thousands desperate to play some part of this historic day. However, the roars when Bosnia scored showed how many of their number are here. I had been talking to one of the fans and told him I was Welsh. He was unnecessarily apologetic. But when Jovo Lukic's effort crossed the line he shouted in my face 'we love to ruin a f——- party'. Don't we know it.
08:49pm
Lukic is next in the book. Another late challenge, this time on Buchanan as he looked to get a counter going.
08:48pm
Demirovic goes into the book for a late challenge on Cornelius as the defender looked to clear.
08:46pm
Canada dominate possession but they are struggling.
They have nothing to offer in terms of real skill so far.
Bosnia are well organised and obdurate enough at the back.
08:40pm
Millar's cross is carried over the line for a corner. A rare chance for Canada after some struggles, but it comes to nothing, for now.
08:35pm
Oluwaseyi nudges a defender aside, turns towards goal, but makes a fairly poor effort to shoot at goal, his shot going well wide and high.
08:34pm
The away side are sitting back as they absorb pressure. They seem comfortable enough.
08:29pm
You'd love to play poker against Jesse Marsch, a coach who befits the description "open book" if ever there was one. He couldn't keep a lid on his emotions when Jonathon David made a hash of the glorious chance that came Canada's way in the 17th minute, hopping like a man with a drawing pin in his shoe, and Bosnia's opening goal has left him looking like he's realised his bank account has been cleaned out. Bosnia had served notice of their danger at set plays and so it proved. Canada are in trouble.
08:24pmKey moments
The forward gets to a flick-on to head past the keeper as the Bosnians go ahead!
The Canadians had struggled to keep set pieces under control and Lukic took advantage for Bosnia's fourth corner of the game so far.
That is Lukic's first international goal.
08:20pm
The ball bounces to David, just inside the box.
The striker connects cleanly with his shot, but it is straight at goalkeeper Vasilj.
Things are improving for the hosts.
08:17pm
Canada win a corner on the right, but nothing is made of the set piece.
08:15pm
Johnston goes into the book.
He is given a yellow card for a wild challenge on Memic, who was breaking down the left wing.
08:13pm
Millar's long throw does nothing. Canada are struggling for ideas so far.
08:09pm
De Fougerolles shepherds Lukic out of play, as the defender continues to play adroitly in the opening stages.
08:05pm
Mahmic snaps at a shot inside the box after a cross is not properly cleared, and Canada get away with it.
08:03pm
The match gets underway. Canada get an early corner.
07:52pm
The atmosphere here at the FIFA Fan Festival is ramping up, despite the awful entertainment served up in the last hour or so. Organised fun does not work. Let the football inspire the cheers not a sequence of minor celebs yelling at us to 'get loud'. In truth, there has been almost a humble attitude here in the streets of Toronto so far today. They know it is historic and the Canadians are not the type to scream themselves into hysteria before it has even begun. Pictures have shown the Red Sea flooding the streets on the way to the stadium. One of the reasons for that is that the trains have been stopping short of the final station and the fans have been forced to do the final kilometre by foot. It's worked, though. It is quite joyous to be here.
07:42pm
There are some eye-catching videos circulating on social media of a big red march to the stadium - World Cup fever has clearly gripped the hosts. Stephen Warnock , who is in the stadium for BBC Sport, tells me the atmosphere is "genuinely amazing" and it feels like everyone who has a ticket senses a big opportunity for Canada. It will be interesting to see how Canada play and what Jesse Marsch has planned for them.
07:37pm
As a former resident of Toronto, I can attest that the zestiest I ever saw the city was when it was once unexpectedly not snowy.
This is different.

As a Welshman, it slightly pains me to be here in Toronto about to watch the opening match in Canada. This would have been Wales playing one of the host nations if they had not lost to Bosnia on penalties (who then did the formality of beating some country called Italy to book their place).
But here I am at the Fifa fan fest near the Toronto Stadium and it is a lovely day and a lovely atmosphere. Plenty of Bosnians here and everyone is mingling in high spirits. 'High' might be the operative word, as there is a distinct whiff in the air... cannabis is legal here.

Hello and welcome to coverage from the World Cup of Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Canadaian manager Jesse Marsch has a simple message for anyone wondering whether his side are ready for the weight of a home World Cup: they are not just ready for it, they want it.
"If you do this for a living, this is where you want to be," Marsch said ahead of the Group B opener.
"I came to Canada to be the coach because I liked these guys and I believed they could fit the way I wanted to play, but I came here to lead them in the World Cup — in the home World Cup. I wanted this responsibility."
Unfortunately for Canada, the biggest injury concern remains captain Alphonso Davies , who will miss the match with a hamstring injury suffered during Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final last month. But Marsch said an MRI on Wednesday brought encouraging signs.
"We're getting ready to ramp things up," the American said.
"He will not be available for tomorrow, but he's showing, like he always has, a real good ability to recover from muscle injuries. We're really hopeful that over the next days and weeks we can accelerate things and give him a chance to contribute here soon."
Bosnia and Herzegovina know they are underdogs heading into the match but the Balkan nation will play with pride as they return to the tournament for the first time in 12 years.
Bosnia will look to advance past the group stage this time around after managing one win during their 2014 debut in Brazil .
"We are a small country," head coach Sergej Barbarez said. "This is our second ever World Cup and for sure we are sort of an underdog in many of the matches ahead."
But despite his side being ranked 64th, the coach is confident in his side's ability to perform on the world's biggest stage.
"If you know our results, I think you have to just admire what we've managed to achieve."
