The magic ran out on Sunday night in Atlanta. For months, Toronto FC found a way to claw back into games, but that resilience hit a hard wall at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The 3-1 loss officially ended the team's season and their playoff hopes for the sixth straight year. This was not a game they could lose, yet they gave up two early goals that broke their spirit before halftime.
Miguel Almiron opened the scoring for the hosts in the 22nd minute. Toronto could not mount a comeback this time. Coach Robin Fraser told reporters that the early mistakes were "soft goals" that changed the entire game. He stated that conceding two goals at the start rendered the remainder of the match desperate. "We've been talking about moments all year, and we end up giving up a couple of soft goals, and that changed everything," Fraser said to reporters, according to Waking The Red . The team simply ran out of time to fix the mess.

The Injury Toll and the Hole They Dug
Fraser pointed to the first half of the season as a major reason for the struggle. "I do think that the injuries in the first half of the season really hurt us," Fraser said, according to Yahoo Sports . Those missed players left gaps that Atlanta exploited with ease. A total of 63 goals conceded by Toronto this year, 19 higher than the 2025 figure, reveals the extent of the damage. Finishing 12th with a 9-12-12 record, they reached the final weekend. With no path to close the gap, they remained four points behind the playoff threshold.
Even though Lewis Morgan scored a late goal in the 79th minute, it was too little, too late. That was the only shot on target to score for the visitors. Captain Jonathan Osorio knew the group had the talent to make it but fell short. "I'm just very disappointed that we weren't able to make the playoffs this year with the team that we have," Osorio said. The fans watched their team fight hard all year, but the defense could not hold the line when it mattered most.
History Repeats Itself in Georgia
Mercedes-Benz Stadium remains a house of horrors for this squad. Atlanta has not seen a Toronto victory since the 2019 MLS Eastern Conference final match. The pattern of late collapses finally broke, but not in their favor. Comebacks after the 80th minute generated 18 points this season, accounting for almost half their overall tally. You cannot live on hope forever, and this loss proves it. According to reports, the decisive factor was allowing two goals before halftime.

The season ends with a trip to Philadelphia on Saturday, November 7. The team faces the Union on MLS Decision Day, but the playoff race is already over for them. "We had some moments that let us down, and when you go down, give up a goal, it changes the game," Fraser added. The reality is clear. For the sixth consecutive season, Toronto FC will be absent from the postseason. The comeback streak is dead, and the rebuilding starts now.
