The Giants made a commitment beyond another elevation

New York signed Ford from its practice squad Tuesday and released Jihad Ward. The transaction log separately records Ford's standard elevations on October 3, October 10 and October 17. Tuesday's move puts him on the active roster rather than simply calling him up for another game.

Ford's official player record lists zero starts and zero sacks in his three games. Those totals describe limited NFL experience. They do not establish that he has never pressured a quarterback, and they certainly don't tell us how often he has beaten a block. We should resist inventing a pass-rush grade from a tackle column.

Brian Burns and Chauncey Golston remain on injured reserve. Their absence makes the evaluation more urgent, but urgency cannot supply Ford with a skill he hasn't shown. His 2025 undrafted signing gives this a good developmental story. It doesn't make him the next answer before the work happens.

For Ford, I'd start with selected third-down opportunities in which the job is clear: attack the assigned edge, keep the quarterback contained and finish when a teammate forces movement. An outside rusher can ruin a productive pressure by opening an escape lane. Chasing a sack at any cost would tell the Giants less than a repeatable, disciplined rush.

The evaluation should include the unglamorous plays. Making the passer reset, forcing a throw early or keeping him in the pocket can help without appearing beside Ford's name in the sack column. Conversely, a tackle after a long completion doesn't necessarily validate the rush that preceded it.

There is a reasonable alternative if the coaches see more value in his early-down or special-teams work. He doesn't need a fixed snap quota, and the staff's film has information the public totals lack. But a promotion without an identifiable role risks becoming another temporary patch that teaches the organization very little.

Ford has earned the roster opportunity. Against Houston, the Giants should use it to find out whether he can handle a useful piece of the pass rush, rather than ask him to replace an injured star all at once.
