The hockey world lost one of its most decorated champions on Tuesday when André Pronovost, a four-time Stanley Cup winner, passed away at the age of 90.
But beyond the historical significance of his career, the loss carries a deeply personal weight for one current NHL player. Pronovost was the grandfather of New Jersey Devils forward Anthony Mantha .
The Montreal Canadiens announced the passing in an official statement, expressing their sadness at the loss of the former champion. NHL reporter Tom Gulitti reminded everyone the family connection, noting that Pronovost was Mantha's grandfather, and offered condolences to both the Pronovost and Mantha families.
Pronovost's legacy in the sport is substantial. Winning four Stanley Cups places him among a select group of players who have hoisted hockey's ultimate prize multiple times. His connection to the Canadiens organization made the announcement from Montreal a fitting tribute.
For Mantha, the timing adds an emotional layer to what has already been a transitional stretch in his career. The Quebec native signed a two-year deal with the Devils earlier this summer, carrying a $4.75 million average annual value. That contract came after an extended free agency period during which he had been linked most prominently to the Canadiens, the very franchise his grandfather helped build into a dynasty.
Reports at the time suggested Montreal's reluctance centered on the term Mantha was seeking rather than the money. The Penguins were also believed to be interested in bringing him back. New Jersey ultimately emerged as a surprise landing spot, working quietly while attention focused elsewhere.
Mantha's connection to Quebec hockey runs deep, and Pronovost's passing is a reminder of just how intertwined family and the sport can be in that province. The forward now carries not only his own ambitions into the upcoming season but also the legacy of a grandfather who knew what it meant to win at the highest level.
The focus now shifts from the ice to family, as the Pronovost and Mantha families grieve the loss of a man who left an indelible mark on the game.
