Travis Kelce has revealed that Kansas City Chiefs running back Emmett Johnson has been absorbing everything he can from the coaches, and this showed during his appearance against the Denver Broncos.
Although the Chiefs suffered a painful 28-24 defeat after a controversial decision on the last play, their rookie RB Emmett Johnson showed glimpses of what he can do on the field, as he rushed for 15 yards on 1 carry and also recorded 5 receptions for 128 yards.
The biggest moment from him came in the second quarter when Patrick Mahomes found him wide open, and he then went on to complete a 73-yard touchdown to help the Chiefs take the lead.
The former Nebraska player has shown great quality and played meaningful snaps for the Chiefs' offence but all of that has come due to the work he has put in behind the scenes.
The guy's got f***** energy. He plays the game right. He shows up to work with the right mentality. He's just been absorbing everything he could possibly learn from all the coaches, from DeMarco Murray to Coach Reid, Kenneth Walker, even obviously Bieniemy being, you know, the offensive coordinator, and him being an NFL running back, listening to everything. He has the same mentality in that room. That room right now is playing as good as any room in the league. For Emmett to finally have a huge game and get his first career touchdown, I was happy as h*** for him," said Travis Kelce on The New Heights podcast.
Johnson has provided the Chiefs with an option as a wide receiver. He has 14 receptions to his name for 237 yards, which is incredible. Playing alongside some of the greatest players has definitely helped Johnson, as he has elevated his game and is now becoming a key player on offence.
The Chiefs' official social media page acknowledged the brilliance Johnson displayed against the Broncos. His 143 total yards against the Broncos was their stat of the week.
"We're going to need more of it," Mahomes said while talking about Johnson's performance against the Broncos. "I mean, obviously Kenneth (Walker) is the guy, but you want to be able to take carries away from him, so we can have him for the full entire season. And if we can come in, and Emmett (Johnson) can come in, be a change of pace, and break tackles, and make plays, catch the ball, do all that different type of stuff, defences can't relax."
Johnson will be hoping to follow up his big performance against the Broncos with another explosive outing against the New York Jets, who are currently third in the AFC East with a 2-6 record.
