The Philadelphia Flyers were already struggling in a game they had no business winning on Tuesday night, according to those watching closely, when things turned ugly on the ice.
Flyers' Trevor Zegras was assessed a 10-minute misconduct penalty in the second period, reportedly for verbally confronting referee Kyle Rehman after a sequence that left the forward visibly furious.
The incident apparently stemmed from Rehman failing to move out of the path of a clearing attempt, which led directly to a goal against Philadelphia. Zegras, understandably frustrated, let the official know exactly how he felt.
Whatever Zegras said, it was enough to earn him a seat in the penalty box for half a period.
According to Charlie O'Connor of PHLY Sports, the misconduct was "presumably for yelling at the official for not getting out of the way of that clear." O'Connor added that while Zegras' frustration was understandable, "you need to keep your cool there."
Kevin Kurz of The Athletic echoed a similar sentiment, noting that while he could not confirm exactly what Zegras said to Rehman, the referee "should probably understand his frustration when he doesn't get out of the way of the puck and it leads to a goal. Like, read the room man."
The misconduct left the Flyers without one of their key forwards for a significant stretch of the game, compounding an already difficult night.
Kurz went on to note that the officiating throughout the game was questionable overall, writing that "some of these calls are embarrassing," even while acknowledging the Flyers were not playing well enough to deserve a lead.
The incident raises familiar questions about the relationship between players and officials, and whether referees should show more self-awareness when their positioning contributes to a play going wrong.
