- Trey Gibson earns first Major League win
BALTIMORE — Trey Gibson, the son of Southern graduate JR Gibson, earned his first Major League win on Wednesday.
Gibson tossed 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball for the Baltimore Orioles against the Tampa Bay Rays , allowing six hits and four walks with a strikeout in an 11-2 victory.
"It's pretty cool, it's a pretty cool moment," Trey Gibson said in the postgame interview. "The past month has really been kind of a rollercoaster, so I'm just trying to stay where my feet are and do my job."
"Really impressive, obviously the five runs in the first was awesome for a lot of reasons, but especially for Trey to settle into the game," Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said postgame. "His sinker was really impressive tonight. "
Gibson went undrafted in 2023 and made his big league debut against the New York Yankees on May 3.
He became the first Oriole pitcher to debut at Yankee Stadium in team history.
JR Gibson graduated from Southern in 1985, and his uncle is longtime Garrett College men's basketball coach Dennis Gibson.
JR, along with several members of Trey's family, was shown several times on the MASN broadcast.
