Mancini had not appeared in an MLB game since July 31, 2023, with the Chicago Cubs . That changed Monday when the Angels selected his contract from Triple-A Salt Lake and brought him back to the majors.
The 34-year-old returned to Angel Stadium to face his former team, the Houston Astros , and made the moment count. The veteran utilityman went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in his first at-bat, giving Los Angeles an immediate return on the move.
Foul Territory shared video Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, from Mancini's appearance on the show, where he explained how distant the game felt before the Angels asked if he still had more left.
"I felt a million miles away from baseball."
His admission added weight to the comeback. Mancini was not simply waiting for the right roster opening. He was preparing to step away from baseball entirely.

Mancini's path back also tied directly to three-time MLB All-Star Brady Anderson. The Angels' hitting coach knew him well from their time with the Baltimore Orioles and helped convince him to give the game another chance.
For Mancini, the challenge went beyond swing mechanics. The Stage 3 colon cancer survivor has spoken honestly about the emotional toll that followed his diagnosis and recovery, adding another layer to his return.
The context makes the move feel bigger than a standard depth addition. The Angels did not just add another bat. They gave the veteran a reason to believe another chapter was possible.
After 1,043 days away from a major league field, Mancini looked ready instead of rusty. For the Angels, one call changed the direction of his career and gave his comeback a rare full-circle feel.
